About the team: The Social Sciences Journals team is comprised of 9 Publishers: 2 in Oxford (UK), 4 in London (UK), 2 in Amsterdam (NL) and 1 in Shanghai (China); And 4 Scientific Editors based in Amsterdam (NL), London (UK) and Delhi (India).

About the role: We are looking for a bright and enthusiastic individual to work alongside the Publishers and existing Associate Scientific Editors to help further grow, shape and develop Social Sciences & Humanities Open and Acta Psychologica, significant, broad scope, sound-science open access titles within the Social Sciences Journals team. This role will balance academic research knowledge with efficiency, analytic skills, network development and creativity.

We are looking to recruit a full-time Associate Scientific Editor to work at any of the main offices in the UK or the Netherlands (London, Oxford or Amsterdam). Please note you must already have a permit to work in one of these locations to be considered for this role. Any applicant would need to have a good educational background and keen interest in academic publishing; excellent communication skills; and would have to be prepared to work somewhat independently from the rest of the immediate team while also contributing to team initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • To work with the Publishing team, and collaborate with the existing Scientific Editors, to help facilitate the growth and development of Acta Psychologica and Social Sciences & Humanities Open, including the identification, acquisition, management, and development of high impact social science content, and helping to facilitate the content pipeline.
  • To establish and maintain close contacts with the social sciences communities in academia and industry, and to work directly with authors, reviewers, and editors to help manage an efficient, rigorous and author friendly peer review process which maintains high professional and academic standards.
  • Oversee and support the peer review process: screen new manuscript for compliance with basic journal requirements and assign to relevant reviewers or subject editors where in place.
  • Ensuring efficient article transfer opportunities within the Elsevier Social Sciences portfolio collaborating with the internal transfer team as well as external parties.
  • Support the subject editors and publisher to build a network of editors, scientific reviewers, and authors across the social sciences.
  • Work with the publisher to build effective infrastructure for the journal, including improvement of internal processes and editorial team development.
  • Monitor and update the journal webpages to ensure ongoing relevance and factual accuracy.
  • Provide ongoing reporting to management team, and reporting/analysis as required to support ongoing journal development.
  • Responsible for managing the solicitation of journal content in new and emerging social science fields.
  • Editorial expansion/innovation in related fields.
Requirements
  • PhD degree in a Social Science; psychology preferred but not essential.
  • Understanding of academic publishing.
  • Customer-focused, attentive.
  • Excellent interactive, team working skills and a drive to collaborate across multiple internal departments, ability to connect with a broad range of people as well as to work independently.
  • Flexible, analytical, and proactive; ability to think critically about a wide range of research issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communications.
  • Experience of authoring and the peer review process would be helpful, but not essential.
