Job summary

WSP is seeking an Associate Protection & Control Engineer within the UK Energy business. You will lead the design and delivery of protection and control systems for transmission and distribution projects, providing technical leadership and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.

You will undertake BP141 and CDAE activities, ensuring designs meet client standards. The role involves mentoring engineers, engaging with clients, and contributing to the growth of our Protection & Control capability

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience in design and delivery of protection and control schemes for transmission and distribution.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical networks, standards and protection philosophies.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and delivering complex projects.
  • Experience reviewing and approving technical documentation and calculations.
  • Knowledge of major substation equipment suppliers (ABB/Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy, GE Vernova).
  • Familiarity with IEC 61850 and IEC 60870 communication protocols.
  • Mentoring, coaching and developing engineers in a technical environment.
  • Experience supporting client engagement, governance and business development.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards Chartership.
  • BP141 Authorisation (or working towards) would be advantageous.

A Little More About Your Role…

As an Associate Protection & Control Engineer working within the UK Energy business, you will play a leading role in delivering the power transmission infrastructure required to support the UK's transition to Net Zero. Working across major transmission and distribution programmes, you will provide technical leadership, project direction and people management whilst supporting the growth and development of our Protection & Control capability.

WSP has a significant workload across the UK energy sector that will provide the opportunity to shape major infrastructure projects, develop high-performing teams and influence the future direction of our technical capabilities. You will work within a multidisciplinary environment, collaborating with specialists across engineering disciplines and acting as a trusted advisor to clients and colleagues alike.

As Part Of This, You Will Be Responsible For
  • Technical Leadership: Lead the development and delivery of complex protection and control solutions for transmission and distribution projects, providing technical direction and assurance across multidisciplinary teams.
  • BP141 & CDAE Excellence: Undertake and support National Grid BP141 and Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) activities, ensuring designs are technically compliant, robust and aligned to client standards and governance requirements.
  • People Leadership: Lead, mentor and develop engineers across a range of experience levels, supporting performance, technical growth, succession planning and capability development within the discipline.
  • Client Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, acting as a trusted advisor and representing WSP during technical discussions, design reviews and project governance meetings.
  • Business Growth: Support the growth of our Protection & Control capability through recruitment, resource planning, work winning activities and the continuous development of our technical offering.
  • Collaborative Culture: Foster a positive and inclusive team environment that encourages knowledge sharing, innovation and continuous improvement across the wider Energy business.

  • Lead the design and delivery of protection and control systems for electrical transmission and distribution networks.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight on complex engineering projects from concept through to commissioning.
  • Act as a BP141 Authorised Engineer and/or CDAE, supporting design assurance activities and ensuring compliance with client requirements and industry standards.
  • Review and approve protection and control designs, calculations, specifications and technical documentation.
  • Lead technical design reviews, hazard reviews and quality assurance activities.
  • Manage and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams to successfully deliver project objectives.
  • Provide technical support during tendering, project planning, installation, commissioning and handover phases.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships, supporting project delivery and business development opportunities.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, graduates and apprentices, supporting their technical progression and professional development.
  • Drive innovation, best practice and continuous improvement within the Protection & Control discipline.
  • Support resource management, team utilisation and recruitment activities to ensure sustainable growth of the capability.
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies, industry developments and evolving client requirements across the energy sector.
What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate…

  • Extensive experience in the design and delivery of protection and control schemes within transmission and distribution environments.

  • Proven experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and delivering complex projects.
  • Experience reviewing and approving technical documentation, calculations and design deliverables.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with major substation control and protection equipment suppliers such as ABB/Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy and GE Vernova.
  • Strong understanding of industry communication protocols including IEC 61850 and IEC 60870.
  • Demonstrable experience mentoring, coaching and developing engineers within a technical environment.
  • Experience supporting client engagement, project governance and business development activities.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards Chartership.
  • National Grid BP141 Authorisation (or demonstrable experience working towards authorisation).
  • Experience undertaking Design Assurance and/or Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) responsibilities would be highly advantageous.
