Associate Lecturer - Theatrical & Media Make-up

Role: Associate Lecturer - Theatrical & Media Make-up

Location: Bedford College - Cauldwell Street Campus

Salary: £20.50 per hour

Hours: 15 hours per week – 6 on a Monday, 6 on a Tuesday, and 3 on a Wednesday

Contract Type: Sessional - Hourly Paid

About the role:

We are currently seeking an Associate Lecturer in Makeup to join our Creative Arts department at The Bedford College Group.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching & Assessment - Deliver and assess specialist units on the Level 3 Theatrical & Media Make-up course, ensuring engaging, industry-relevant learning experiences that reflect current trends in film, TV, theatre, and fashion. Lessons should be tailored to individual student needs and creative aspirations.
  • Student Support & Progress Monitoring - Support students in developing technical and creative skills, monitor progress through practical portfolios and written work, and maintain high standards of professionalism and behaviour in line with the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Curriculum & Vocational Development - Contribute to the evolution of a dynamic curriculum that reflects the fast-paced nature of the media make-up industry. Facilitate vocational opportunities through partnerships with production companies, theatres, and freelance professionals.
  • Teamwork & Administration - Engage in course team meetings, maintain accurate records (e.g. registers, assessment tracking), and assist in the smooth running of the programme, including planning for showcases and industry events.
  • Compliance & Promotion - Ensure compliance with safeguarding, EDI, and health & safety policies within practical and studio environments. Participate in promotional activities such as open days, social media campaigns, and external exhibitions to raise the profile of the course and college.

About you

  • Industry & Teaching Experience - You bring current, hands-on experience from the theatrical or media make-up industry—whether in film, TV, theatre, fashion, or editorial—and have a passion for sharing your expertise through teaching and mentoring.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills - You communicate clearly and creatively, with the ability to inspire students and collaborate effectively with colleagues and industry partners.
  • Organisation & Adaptability - You are highly organised, able to manage multiple projects (e.g. student productions, assessments, external briefs), and flexible in adapting to the demands of a creative and ever-evolving industry.
  • Professionalism & Confidentiality - You maintain professional boundaries, handle sensitive information appropriately, and foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.
  • Mobility & Flexibility - You are open to working across different campuses or locations (e.g. studios, theatres, on-set environments) and committed to supporting the College's values and safeguarding responsibilities.

What is an Associate? Associates work on a short term basis as assigned. They teach or provide support services and work with and are supported by core staff. As an Associate you will be issued with an Associate agreement; during this period you will be eligible to work on assignments offered to you. Typically an agreement runs from January to December and may be renewed thereafter.
