Job summary

Buro Happold Fire Engineering is seeking an experienced fire engineering leader to drive major projects and shape design outcomes in the UK. You will guide clients, oversee budgets, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver fire and life-safety solutions.

The role offers hybrid working arrangements across key UK offices, with opportunities to mentor junior staff and develop technical excellence within a globally recognised practice.

Qualifications

• Experience as a fire engineering job-leader on major projects.
• Demonstrable professional experience delivering fire and life safety designs for UK-based projects.
• Track record of gaining agreement for prescriptive and performance-based design solutions from approving authorities.

Responsibilities

• Lead fire engineering projects with the team.
• Inform and support the building design aspirations, functionality and architectural form throughout the design process.
• Lead with client care and general consultancy on projects.
• Be responsible for the financial performance of projects, including invoicing and financial monitoring.
• Represent Buro Happold Fire Engineering at design team meetings, both internal and externally.
• Build knowledge to identify and specify appropriate fixed fire protection systems, i.e. automatic fire detection and/or suppression to support fire engineering design solutions.
• Carry out and review fire engineering calculations including smoke modelling and evacuation analysis.
• Support the development of junior members of the fire team (either as mentor or Line Manager).

Key Duties

• Work with the team to lead fire engineering projects.

• Represent Buro Happold Fire Engineering at design team meetings, both internal and externally.
• Build knowledge to be able to identify and specify appropriate fixed fire protection systems, i.e. automatic fire detection and/or suppression to support fire engineering design solutions.
• Carry out and review fire engineering calculations including smoke modelling and evacuation analysis from simple hand calculations to complex 3D computational modelling (previous CFD experience is welcome but not essential).
• Support the development of junior members of the fire team (either as mentor or Line Manager).

Your skills & experience

• Experience as a fire engineering job-leader on major projects.
• Higher education qualification in engineering or in a fire safety related subject.
• Demonstrable professional experience in delivering fire and life safety designs and fire engineered solutions for UK-based projects.
• Track record of gaining agreement for prescriptive and performance-based design solutions from approving authorities.
• Strong people management skills, including in a line management context.
• Excellent commercial and project management skills.
