A local government health authority is seeking an exceptional leader for the role of Public Health Director. This pivotal role requires superb communication and relationship-building skills to lead public health initiatives and manage a dedicated team. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in public health management and be registered as a Public Health Specialist. This role offers an opportunity to make a genuine impact on public health in the Isle of Wight.

This senior post within the Isle of Wight Council sits within the Public Health Senior Management Team, reporting to the Director of Public Health. The post is well supported within an established team of Consultant, Public Health Principals, Senior Practitioners, Practitioners and Analysts.

Within this career graded range – to be recruited or progress to the Associate Director of Public Health role – applicants are expected to be able to demonstrate significant leadership experience and skills, managing or leading a public health service or function, alongside extensive knowledge of Local Government and the wider public health system.
Working alongside the Consultant in Public Health and Director of Public Health, you’ll take a significant leadership role and be outward facing, providing public health leadership across the Island and Hampshire and Isle of Wight system to improve health and reduce inequalities.
A key element of this role will be deputising for the Director of Public Health and leading the development and implementation of system strategies, alongside operational and financial management in delivery of public health functions.
There will be opportunities to shape and develop the role in areas of personal and professional interest, including building on existing relationships with research partners and providing Educational Supervision for Public Health Registrars.
As a career graded post in a newly recruited leadership team, this role offers excellent development opportunity. This includes recruitment as – or for those recruited into the Consultant in Public Health role, development towards – Associate Director of Public Health.
Lead, plan and deliver the council’s public health services that support and underpin the successful customer focused delivery of public health priorities and outcomes, managing relationships and developing partnerships across health and care and wider public and voluntary sectors, the Integrated Care System and constituent NHS organisations, including supporting development of partnership plans and Integrated Care System, with leadership of the system prevention plans and population health management programmes.
Provide strategic leadership and direction, operational management and financial control for the Public Health team including:
Ensure that the statutory duties of the council in relation to public health mandated and non-mandated functions are delivered to the highest standard and provide leadership to enable delivery of the council’s wider health and health inequalities duties.
Be accountable for the performance of the public health agenda and the delivery of high-quality strategic aims. Support the Director of Public Health to deliver the desired culture and aims of the Council.
