Job summary

AtkinsRéalis in the UK is seeking an Associate Director Clean Water Process Engineer to lead multi-disciplinary design teams on iconic water projects across the UK. You will drive technical solutions, ensure code compliance, and deliver value for Thames Water and other clients.

You’ll motivate and mentor engineers, manage scope, risk and budgets, and collaborate with stakeholders across the UK and abroad to shape resilient water networks and sustainable infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Chemical/Process Engineering or equivalent required.
  • Chartered Chemical/Process Engineer credential preferred.
  • Experience leading large-scale Clean Water Process design teams in a consultancy.
  • Strong knowledge of drinking water treatment, conventional and advanced methods.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration with diverse stakeholders; knowledge of CDM.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of Clean Water Process Engineers delivering design work for complex projects.
  • Ensure compliance with design codes, standards, and quality requirements.
  • Coordinate development of design solutions with project teams to meet milestones and budgets.
  • Produce and review technical deliverables including reports, drawings, and calculations.
  • Provide technical leadership within the D&AT practice and drive best practices.
  • Grow and manage Clean Water Process Engineering capabilities regionally or nationally.
  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams in the UK and overseas to deliver integrated designs.
  • Guide junior team members and offer engineering judgment in challenging situations.
  • Identify and develop new opportunities, support client needs assessment and proposals.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders at all levels internally and externally.

We are looking for an energetic and experienced Associate Director Clean Water Process Engineer to join our team within the Design & Advanced Technology (D&AT) Practice of AtkinsRéalis. You’ll be part of a talented, multi-disciplinary team delivering cutting edge, iconic projects to our Water market clients – clients such as Thames Water, Anglian Water, South East Water, as well as other regional water authorities. Your role
  • Bring together client, operational, project and service teams, fostering collaboration across AtkinsRéalis and partner organisations to enable integrated delivery, optimise project outcomes, and maximise value across complex infrastructure programmes.
  • Lead a team of Clean Water Process Engineers in the delivery of technical design work for complex multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring compliance with relevant national and project-specific design codes, standards, and quality requirements.
  • Lead the development and coordination of Clean Water Process design solutions and deliverables, working with project management teams to achieve key project milestones, programmes, and budgets.
  • Manage the production, review, and approval of technical deliverables, including design reports, drawings, calculations, and scopes of work.
  • Provide Technical Leadership within discipline for the regional and national D&AT practice and influence D&AT Practice wide initiatives and recommend best practices to improve internal processes and services.
  • Grow, develop, and manage the Clean Water Process Engineering capabilities within the regional and/or national practice.
  • Work independently with guidance in only the most challenging situations.
  • Exercise personal judgement to solve difficult problems where appropriate and provide guidance to junior team members.
  • Provide technical leadership in the identification and development of new opportunities, guiding clients through needs assessment, option development, scope definition and proposal or business case preparation for complex infrastructure programmes.
  • Work closely with a multi-disciplinary team in the UK and overseas to deliver integrated design solutions.
About you
  • A degree in Chemical / Process Engineering or equivalent.
  • Chartered Chemical / Process Engineer.
  • Proven experience in leading large-scale Clean Water Process engineering team for a design consultancy including within a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Takes broad perspective to identify innovative solutions, challenges the status quo.
  • Demonstrates in-depth knowledge and broad expertise in drinking water treatment process and principles – conventional and advanced treatment technologies.
  • Demonstrates exemplary communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to diverse stakeholders.
  • Expert knowledge of current design codes and standards as well as industry best practices, including CDM Regulations.
  • Experience in design and delivery of projects with adherence to UK safety and environmental regulations, process safety techniques (e.g. HAZOP), knowledge of capital and operational costs - and risk assessments.
  • Experience in UK Water market is preferred.
  • A proactive, highly motivated mindset with a collaborative approach to drive teamwork and shared success across projects and the wider AtkinsRéalis D&AT practice.
  • Comfortable liaising with stakeholders at all levels both internally and externally.
