A healthcare provider in Milton Keynes is seeking an Associate Biomedical Practitioner for a 12-month contract. You will work in the laboratory assisting with patient sample management and routine biochemical tests. Candidates must have a relevant degree and experience in a Pathology laboratory. Salary ranges from £27,485 to £30,162 pro rata. This role requires good organisational skills and clear communication abilities.

Associate Biomedical Practitioner

Department: Blood Sciences - Chemical Pathology, Band 4

Position: 12‑month contract within the busy Pathology service. Will work behind the scenes in the laboratory.

Key responsibilities
  • Efficient receipt, checking and logging of patient samples on the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS); ensure all specimens meet acceptance criteria and are correctly prioritised.
  • Prepare, centrifuge, aliquot and store samples appropriately while assisting with referrals to external laboratories.
  • Operate and maintain automated chemistry analysers to perform routine biochemical tests such as electrolytes, liver function and lipid profiles under the supervision of Biomedical Scientists.
  • Accurately enter and verify patient data and results on LIMS; flag discrepancies and contribute to troubleshooting flagged results.
  • Maintain reagent stock levels, reagent storage, equipment cleanliness and uphold safety and infection control standards.
  • Support the 24/7 laboratory service with 7‑day shift pattern 07:30‑20:00 or as operationally required; unsocial hours paid at Agenda for Change rates.
  • Assist with internal quality controls, review and remediate unacceptable results.
Main duties of the post

Deliver a diagnostic service analysing blood, urine, faeces and other materials to achieve efficient and effective patient care and effective resource management within the hospital.

Meet all required national and Trust standards within the Blood Sciences department.

Qualifications and knowledge
  • Good standard of general education.
  • Science/Math studied to A Level or equivalent.
  • NVQ level 3 or an approved Foundation Course in Science if not already qualified.
  • Foundation degree or degree in Biomedical Science or accredited degree.
  • Knowledge of the principles of Health & Safety at Work.
Experience
  • Experience in a Pathology laboratory.
  • Experience working unsocial hours shift patterns.
  • Vocational Qualification Level 3 or equivalent level plus additional theoretical or applied training in specific discipline to diploma equivalent level.
