Renfrewshire Council is seeking to recruit an Assistant Waste Collections Team Leader

Reporting to the Waste Services Manager within Environment, Housing, and Infrastructure, you will make a major contribution to continually improving the ongoing development and delivery of the Council’s waste management responsibilities, including (but not limited to):

Leading, supporting, and managing frontline waste collection teams to deliver efficient, safe, and customer‑focused services.

Overseeing operational delivery of refuse collection, disposal, and recycling centre activities, ensuring compliance with service standards, legislation, and Council policy.

Contributing to the ongoing development and implementation of service improvements, modernisation initiatives, and performance monitoring.

Assisting the Waste Services Manager in resource allocation, workforce planning, and employee training and development.

Monitoring and reporting on operational performance, budgets, and service delivery outcomes.

Promoting a positive health and safety culture, ensuring all operations are compliant with relevant regulations.

Supporting the development of new systems and management information tools to improve efficiency and data‑led decision making.

Building strong working relationships with Elected Members, colleagues, partners, and trade unions to ensure collaborative service delivery.

Deputising for the Waste Services Manager when required and contribute to cross‑service projects and initiatives.

Engaging with national bodies such as APSE, CIWM, SEPA, and Zero Waste Scotland to stay informed of industry best practice.

It is essential you are educated to Degree level or have relevant appropriate professional experience, experience of working within Waste Services functions in a large and diverse organisation formulating and implementing operational plans aswell as experience of, managing people within a large, unionised environment and experience of delivering frontline operational services and managing household waste recycling centres.

You must have experience of Business Management and Health and Safety Management Systems.

Knowledge of the statutory and legislative requirements of the service and relevant national and local programmes and frameworks, Operational knowledge of large goods vehicle operator licence requirements and undertakings of that licence for staff you deploy and knowledge and understanding of route optimisation systems and resource management is essential.

You must be able to demonstrate effective influencing skills in order to deliver business objectives, have clear analytical skills to allow the exploration, evaluation and interpretation of information and opinions aswell as decision making skills with the ability to make decisions and recommendations based on the analysis of options.

Demonstratable effective communication, presentation, networking, project management and motivational skills at all levels as well significant leadership and management skills corporately and in front line and service delivery areas are also essential.

You should have a demonstratable awareness of political and community issues relating to local government and hold a current Driving Licence.

Please note that this post is temporary, subject to business needs and funding for 6 Months or until the requirement for the post ceases, whichever date is the earlier.
