Job summary

An NHS Trust in South East London is seeking an Assistant Screening Practitioner to support patients undergoing colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy. Candidates need to be self-motivated and can work independently; training will be provided. Experience in health care, especially in Endoscopy, is preferred. This role involves conducting patient assessments and supporting the Specialist Screening Practitioners in their duties.

Qualifications

Job description

The South East London Bowel Cancer Screening Centre provides screening for residents of Greenwich, Lewisham, Bromley and Bexley boroughs.

The post holder will provide specialist care and support for individuals that participate in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. The post holder will work closely with the Lead SSP, Senior SSPs, SSPs, BCS Clerical team, Endoscopy team, Colorectal team, Pathology, and Radiology and Cancer Services in the trust and have a clinical and non-clinical commitment to the bowel cancer screening centre.

The ASP will be supported by the Lead SSP, Senior SSPs, SSPs and Programme Manager.

The post holder will assist the SSP in the provision of Bowel Cancer screening within the BCSP, to include; providing appropriate care to patients before, during and after the procedure, data collection and inputting, supporting all members of the Bowel Screening and Endoscopy teams. The ASP will often be working without direct supervision or on their own. The post holder will have a degree of responsibility and autonomy and will be required to make decisions within boundaries and agreed limits.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking an Assistant Screening Practitioner to provide clinical support to our team of Specialist Screening Practitioners for Bowel Scope Screening. You will need to be self motivated and able to work independently as well as enjoy being part of a team. You do not need to have experience as an Assistant Screening Practitioner, training will be provided.

As an Assistant Screening Practitioner you will be expected to support patients undergoing colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy.

Assistant Screening Practitioners are responsible for conducting patient assessment (including medical history) working to service and programme protocols, providing information to patients, preparing patients for endoscopic investigations, cannulation, venepuncture and carrying out clinical observations (pulse, BP, SaO2), and inputting of clinical data.

Potential candidates should have a minimum of 2 years previous experience as a Health Care Assistant. Potential candidates will be expected to manage and prioritise their own clinical workload and work closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team.

Essential and Desirable

  • oExperience of the importance of developing self and others oExperience of working in an acute setting. oExperience of using evidence-based practice
  • Minimum 6 months experience working within the Endoscopy setting, gastroenterology or gastrointestinal care Attended an Endoscopy course such as GIN or JETS competency
  • Experience of undertaking small research or audit project Demonstrates an understanding of the JAG standards BCS Program as part of the NHS programme for delivering care within Endoscopy Minimum of 6 months experience of working in Endoscopy, gastroenterology or gastrointestinal care
