The Assistant Ranger post is based in Yateley working at Hampshire Countryside Service sites across north Hampshire. This small team works closely with local communities and volunteer groups to manage and protect the nature reserves and green spaces across North Hampshire.
This exciting role will include a wide range of practical maintenance and conservation tasks on predominantly heathland and woodland sites. It will include frequent site patrols, litter picking and general site maintenance. Habitat management tasks involve brushcutting, tree removal, scrub cutting and the application of herbicides. Other duties will include habitat and species surveying, livestock lookering, running volunteer groups and delivering education sessions. The post requires a willingness to take on a wide range of support and health & safety functions including COSHH and First Aid. The successful candidate will have a good basic knowledge of wildlife conservation and habitat management techniques, particularly relating to heathland management.
Having a flexible approach to work, you will be willing to work outdoors in all weathers both in a team and on your own. A basic level of certification in the use of power-tools such as chainsaws and brush‑cutters is essential, but training will be provided to the successful candidate for other competencies, which may include training for machinery such as tractors and mowers. You will have a basic knowledge of word processing and will be expected to use the County Council's online systems. You will have good interpersonal skills and be able to undertake the physical requirements of the role. You will be expected to work a 1-in-4 weekend rota and occasional bank holidays.
