Assistant Quantity Surveyor

Location: Cambridge

Reporting to: Senior Quantity Surveyor / Managing Quantity Surveyor

Salary: £35,000 – £40,000 per annum + benefits + annual bonuses

About the Role

As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial team across all phases of construction projects. You will assist in cost control, subcontractor management, procurement, and reporting – ensuring all commercial aspects of the project are managed efficiently and accurately.

Our Client

Our client is a construction delivery partner that works directly with major developers, occupiers, retailers, and logistics businesses. They specialise in managing and building projects from concept through to completion, including new‑builds, fit‑outs, expansions, renovations, and reconfigurations. The projects primarily serve industrial and logistics, life sciences, pharmaceuticals, data centres and ports, with additional projects in commercial spaces, retail, hotels and schools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date site records, including photographs and documentation.
  • Liaise with the site management team to complete labour allocation sheets.
  • Participate in and lead relevant meetings including design team reviews, progress updates, and coordination meetings.
  • Review and approve Purchase Orders following site requests and quote submission from TQS/AQS.
  • Conduct Technical Review Meetings (TRMs) with Operations for subcontractor packages.
  • Draft and prepare subcontract orders for review by the SQS/MQS with minimal errors.
  • Measure, price, and agree on budgets for project variations with the QS/SQS.
  • Update and report subcontractor liabilities for cost forecasting.
  • Prepare and monitor cost projections covering labour, staff, plant, and materials.
  • Follow the procurement schedule to ensure timely subcontractor engagement.
  • Issue and manage subcontract enquiries in line with procurement timelines.
  • Evaluate subcontractor quotes and make informed recommendations to SQS/MQS.
  • Certify subcontractor valuations in accordance with agreed valuation cycles.
  • Prepare payment notices for subcontractors in line with payment terms and for review by the SQS/MQS.
  • Track and complete the Collateral Warranty Schedule.
  • Prepare and submit client valuations to maximise project revenue.
  • Assist in initial forecasting with the Estimator for accurate cost/revenue planning.
  • Contribute to monthly forecasting to report accurate project positions.
  • Help compile monthly progress reporting for external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with the main contract and track changes with the Employer’s Agent (EA).
  • Provide support and guidance to Trainee/Graduate Quantity Surveyors (TQS/AQS) on site.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree, HND, or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying or related field.
  • Previous experience in industrial or built environment construction projects.
  • Familiarity with commercial and surveying systems/forms.
  • Strong technical writing and clear communication skills.
