Assistant Quantity Surveyor

Location: Torbay - site travel on occasions

Salary: £35,000-£45,000 & fuel card

Sphere Solutions are working with a reputable general contractor with a strong presence across the South West. Due to continued growth, they are looking to appoint an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to support the commercial team across a range of construction projects.

This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious individual looking to develop their career in quantity surveying, with exposure to the full project lifecycle — from tendering and procurement through to final accounts.

About the Role

Working closely with the Managing Director and Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will assist in the commercial management of projects ranging from £50k to £1.5m, including small extensions and larger work packages on high‑profile sites.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the measurement and preparation of Bills of Quantities (BoQs) for new projects.
  • Support with tender preparation, cost plans, and procurement of subcontractors and materials.
  • Help prepare and submit client applications and invoices using Xero.
  • Maintain accurate cost tracking and assist in preparing project reports.
  • Support subcontract management, valuations, and payment processes.
  • Attend site and progress meetings to gain hands‑on experience of project delivery.
  • Assist with managing variations and pricing additional works.
  • Learn to interpret and measure accurately from drawings.
About You
  • Ideally hold a qualification in Quantity Surveying or Construction Management (HNC/HND/Degree).
  • Previous experience in a similar role is essential.
  • Proficient in Excel and comfortable working with numbers and data.
  • Good understanding of construction processes and commercial awareness.
  • Must drive and have use of our transport.
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong organisational skills, and a willingness to learn.
  • Confident communicator who enjoys working as part of a small, supportive team.
