Job summary

Mech Electrics Limited in Darlington is seeking an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join its M&E team on a major new-build project valued at £15 million. You will support commercial delivery, monitor costs, and assist with valuations, procurement and cost reporting, under guidance from senior QS.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Trainee QS or similar commercial role.
• Ideally, experience within M&E, Mechanical & Electrical or Building Services.
• Alternatively, a background in general construction or a sizeable contracting organisation with exposure to formal QS and commercial procedures.
• Good understanding of commercial processes, cost control and subcontractor management.
• Strong numerical, analytical and organisational skills.
• Good communication and relationship-building abilities.
• Proactive, motivated and keen to develop within a commercial environment.
• A relevant Quantity Surveying or Construction qualification would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the commercial management and financial control of M&E projects.
• Support the preparation, submission and agreement of valuations and applications for payment.
• Assist with subcontractor procurement, package management and payment assessments.
• Monitor project costs, variations and change control.
• Assist with the preparation and management of project budgets, forecasts and cost reports.
• Review subcontractor quotations and assess costs against project requirements.
• Support the management of contractual documentation and commercial risks.
• Liaise with project managers, site teams, subcontractors and the wider commercial department.
• Maintain accurate commercial records and ensure project costs are effectively monitored.
• Work closely with senior Quantity Surveyors to develop commercial knowledge and best practice.

The Opportunity

We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join one of the UK's leading M&E Contractors supporting the commercial delivery of a major new-build project. The successful candidate will initially be working on a new-build office development with an M&E package valued at approximately £15 million, offering excellent exposure to a significant project and the opportunity to develop their commercial experience. Ideally, candidates will have an M&E or Building Services background. However, we would also welcome applications from those with general construction experience or experience working within a larger construction or contracting organisation, where they have gained an understanding of Quantity Surveying and commercial processes. You will be joining a supportive and experienced commercial team, with access to ongoing guidance, mentorship and development to help progress your career.
