Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Psychologist position within Salford Acute Mental Health Services for adults of working age. The successful applicant will work as part of the psychological service provision within the adult acute mental health wards and Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit at Meadowbrook.

Job Responsibilities
  • Support the Psychology service across four mental health wards at Meadowbrook unit.
  • Complete biopsychosocial assessments and psychological formulations under supervision.
  • Co‑facilitate psychologically informed groups together with nursing and occupational therapy colleagues.
  • Take part in service development, evaluation and audit of the Psychology service.
  • Provide training to multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Collaborate with operational support of Acute Care management.

Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
  • An upper second‑class honours degree or higher in psychology.
  • Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Further postgraduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis.
Experience
  • Experience of working with people with mental health problems.
  • Experience of working under supervision and liaising with other healthcare workers.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience of working with service users with complex, risky presentations and/or within a Psychological Service setting.
  • Experience of working within an inpatient environment.
  • Experience of using assessment skills.
  • Experience of developing psychologically informed interventions.
  • Experience of delivering training.
Knowledge
  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with mental health problems or other disabilities.
  • An understanding of psychology applied to mental health care.
  • Knowledge of engagement approaches and clinical assessment skills required for presentations typical of Acute Care settings.

  • Knowledge of risk assessment and formulation.
  • Knowledge of legislation and good practice guidelines relevant to inpatient care.

  • Ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to the service context.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with multidisciplinary team members and wider stakeholders.
  • Ability to use IT programmes including Microsoft Word, Adobe and Excel.
