Assistant Property Officer

The Job

Are you looking to build a career in housing, property or development while helping more people access an affordable home? We are looking for an Assistant Property Officer to join our Strategic Investment and Development team and support the delivery and management of the Council's growing affordable housing and shared ownership programme.

This is a varied and rewarding opportunity to gain practical experience across the full property and housing development process. Working closely with the Principal Asset Officer and other colleagues, you will help gather, maintain and analyse the information needed to progress new housing opportunities, support shared ownership activity and deliver a responsive service to customers.

You will work with geographical, photographic, financial and numerical information, using a range of software and data systems to support site assessments, property transactions, investment decisions, forecasting and reporting. You will also help keep records accurate and up to date, respond to enquiries, arrange and attend meetings and site visits, take minutes and assist with reports and other documents.

The role offers an excellent opportunity to learn new skills and develop an understanding of how new Council housing and shared ownership homes are taken from initial opportunity through to sale, occupation and ongoing management. Training will be provided on relevant software applications and processes.

The Role

You will provide practical, technical and administrative support across a range of housing and property activities. This will include researching and presenting data, maintaining systems, supporting financial and premises-related enquiries and helping senior officers monitor performance, budgets and service delivery.

A key part of the role will be supporting the Council's shared ownership service. You will assist with property marketing and sales progression, purchaser and resident enquiries, lease administration, staircasing and resale activity, and the records and compliance information needed to provide an efficient, customer-focused service.

You will work with colleagues across the Council as well as residents, purchasers, developers and other external organisations. The role will require you to organise your workload, communicate clearly, work accurately and be comfortable moving between office-based tasks, project meetings and site visits.

The Person

We are looking for an organised, motivated and numerate person who is keen to learn and can provide accurate and reliable support. You will have:

  • A good standard of education, including Maths and English at GCSE level or equivalent
  • Experience of researching, inputting, checking and analysing data
  • Experience of presenting information and assisting with reports or written documents
  • Good skills in Word, spreadsheets and other IT or data systems
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills, with good attention to detail
  • The ability to plan and prioritise your workload and work with minimal supervision
  • Good verbal communication skills and a helpful, customer-focused approach
  • The ability to grasp new concepts, contribute positively to a team and manage your own work
  • A full driving licence and the ability to travel to sites as required

Experience in housing, property, local government or a related field would be helpful, as would knowledge of asset management systems, Land Registry, development processes, GIS or complex databases. However, we are equally interested in your ability to learn, use information confidently and provide a high-quality service.

If you are adaptable, accurate and interested in developing a career in housing, this is an opportunity to gain broad experience while supporting the delivery of more affordable homes and better outcomes for residents.

Why Join Us

At East Riding of Yorkshire Council, you will join a supportive and forward-thinking team with opportunities to build your knowledge and develop your career. The role offers:

  • Training on relevant systems, software and shared ownership processes
  • Practical experience across housing development, property information and customer service
  • The opportunity to contribute to the delivery of new affordable and shared ownership homes
  • Varied work involving data, residents, property transactions, meetings and site visits
  • Supportive management, learning opportunities and scope for progression
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements, subject to service requirements
