Job summary

National Highways is looking for an Assistant Project Manager to assist Project Managers and workstream leads in translating strategies into practical delivery plans. The role is based in Bristol, with travel to regional offices as required, and focuses on delivering projects within time, quality, and cost targets.

You will help develop plans, maintain governance products, coordinate inputs from multiple teams and suppliers, and prepare progress reports.

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting delivery of projects in a complex, multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Suitable project management qualification or equivalent experience; membership toward professional body (APM) preferred.
  • Excellent organisational and planning abilities with the ability to manage competing priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Support Project Managers and workstream leads to turn strategies into practical plans.
  • Develop and maintain project and programme management products (plans, schedules, risk logs, governance docs).
  • Coordinate inputs from work package teams, stakeholders, and supply chain for milestones and decisions.
  • Assist in preparing reports, track progress, and escalate issues as needed.
  • Analyse information to identify risks and mitigations and support recovery actions.

Job description

National Highways has an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Project Manager to join our team within Major Projects. As an Assistant Project Manager, you will support Project Managers and workstream leads in turning agreed strategies and priorities into clear, practical plans. You will also contribute to the planning and delivery of projects, carrying out assigned project work to ensure the achievement of project objectives within agreed time, quality, and cost thresholds; maintaining effective governance, quality assurance, health and safety, technical and specialist standards. Please note this position will be based from our Bristol office however travel to regional offices / sites will be required.

  • Support the development, implementation and review of strategies, workstream plans and delivery arrangements, ensuring agreed actions are practical, clearly owned and aligned with programme priorities.
  • Develop and maintain proportionate project and programme management products, including integrated plans, milestone and look-ahead schedules, action trackers, risk and issue records, decision logs, governance products and handover packs.
  • Coordinate inputs from work package teams, specialist functions, stakeholders, delivery partners and the supply chain to identify key milestones, interfaces, dependencies, constraints, commitments and decisions required to support effective delivery.
  • Support the preparation of reports and briefing information, maintaining actions and commitments, tracking project readiness and progress, and highlighting matters requiring intervention or escalation.
  • Analyse project and workstream information to identify emerging risks, gaps, inconsistencies and potential impacts on future activities, and support the development and monitoring of mitigation or recovery actions.
    Suitable project management qualification or equivalent relevant experience, ideally with membership of, or a commitment to work towards membership of, an appropriate professional body (i.e. APM).
  • Experience of supporting project or programme delivery in a complex, multi-disciplinary or matrix environment.
  • Good understanding of health and safety, quality and governance requirements within project delivery.
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills, with the ability to coordinate several activities, maintain accurate records and manage competing priorities.
  • Strong collaboration, stakeholder, communication and presentation skills, with the confidence to bring together contributions from a wide range of teams and disciplines.
