Job Summary

Assistant Practitioner (Respiratory) post will join our growing team for sleep & lung function services at JPUH. You may be required to work across multiple sites. The majority of work will be out patient clinics within our new build community diagnostic centres, although there may be some ward based in‑patient tests within your working days. You will have the opportunity to train / develop skills and participate in both sleep and lung function clinics as part of a supportive team of staff. The majority of the role involves direct patient contact, but does include stock duties, data input and cleaning of equipment.

Main Duties of the Job
  • To support the provision and delivery of more basic lung function measurement and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) service for patients at the James Paget Hospital.
  • To be responsible for preparing, downloading and issuing patients with diagnostic sleep study equipment.
  • To ensure sleep diagnostic tests are of good quality with acceptable channel markers available for analysis.
  • To provide a timely response to CPAP equipment replacement and maintenance queries from patients on a daily basis, either by telephone or walk‑in patients.
  • To accurately measure and document patient observations.
  • To assist in the ordering, stock rotation, maintenance, reprocessing and arranging disposal of medical equipment in use or provided by sleep & lung function service.
  • To accurately update sleep databases and departmental spreadsheets.
  • To effectively communicate with your peers and notify senior staff of any concerns.
  • To provide quality assured diagnostic spirometry testing in‑line with recognised national guidelines.
  • Services you may be involved with may include home sleep study testing, overnight pulse oximetry, spirometry, FeNO, earlobe capillary blood gases, CPAP therapy.
  • Flexibility to work across multiple sites if and when required.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • To provide the first point of contact for patients, relatives and carers arriving for an appointment with the Sleep & Lung Function Services, presenting a professional, calm and confident manner in line with the Trusts Values & Behaviours.
  • To assist with all enquiries to the Sleep & Lung Function service including CPAP parts/checks using the CPAP database and issue CPAP accessories as required, escalating to the appropriate healthcare professional, e.g. Physiologists or Sleep Service Nurse as appropriate.
  • To assist with CPAP and Oximeter clinics by undertaking patient observations, downloading of CPAP data cards and issuing pulse oximeters to help physiologists assess therapy effectiveness.
  • To be responsible for the set up and instruction for home screening studies, ranging from multi‑channel sleep studies to overnight oximetry assessments.

  • To download home screening study data and prepare all necessary equipment for the next patient’s use.
  • Be responsible for highlighting any discrepancies within the downloaded sleep study data to the Physiologists.
  • To maintain, clean and calibrate all sleep analysing equipment and to prepare equipment for disinfection in line with Trust policy and procedures.
  • To complete requisitions, organise and identify faulty equipment that needs to be repaired or replaced.
  • To un‑pack deliveries and checks against orders and asset registers.
  • To communicate all information and messages to patients in a professional and sensitive manner.
  • Photocopying, filing and record keeping as required.
  • To ensure that the patient records are kept up to date and in good order, in accordance with Trust Policy.
  • To work flexibly to meet the needs of the service, including across multiple sites, also weekends and bank holidays as required.
  • To undertake any new procedures that may be adopted in the future within competencies.
  • To support junior staff members in their development.
  • To represent the Sleep and Lung Function Services to other departments and interdepartmental projects and groups as required.
  • Any other appropriate duties which may be required to meet the needs of the service.
Education, Training and Development

Be willing to further your development by being willing to train to perform quality assured diagnostic Spirometry, FeNO tests and earlobe capillary blood gases in outpatient clinics and on wards. To be responsible for meeting and maintaining personal mandatory training requirements.
