Assistant Medical Secretary

The closing date is 19 November 2025

We are recruiting for an Assistant Medical Secretary to join the Secretarial Team for 26 hours per week within the Acute Medicine department, based at York Teaching Hospital. You will provide support to the Medical Secretary and their Consultant Teams.

Excellent administration/secretarial skills and audio-typing experience/qualifications are required, as well as a good understanding of customer relations. You will be required to deal with queries from patients, Consultants and GPs.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for typing clinical and administrative letters, answering telephone enquiries and dealing with patient queries, as well as covering the Medical Secretaries during periods of absence.

The successful candidate will be required to have good organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise the demands of a busy office and manage their time and workload effectively.

They will also be required to work unsupervised and communicate with Consultant Physicians and wider team members on a regular basis.

Experience and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Thorough knowledge of complex medical terminology
  • Previous Secretarial/Administrative experience (6 months minimum)
Qualifications and Training
  • Educated to GCSE Level or equivalent. English at C or above - or equivalent qualification/demonstrable experience
  • Word Processing and Computer literacy skills to RSA3/NVQ3 Level
  • AMSPAR or equivalant typing experience
  • ECDL or equivalant typing experience
  • Previous Office/Administrative experience in an NHS environment
