Assistant Headteacher - Attendance & Pastoral - Interim Role - South Birmingham

An excellent secondary school in South Birmingham is seeking an experienced Assistant Headteacher to take the lead on Attendance and Pastoral provision for the remainder of the academic year. This interim post requires a confident and capable leader with a proven track record of improving attendance, strengthening inclusion, and driving high standards of pastoral care.

Working closely with the Deputy Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team, you will play a key role in shaping a culture where students feel supported, safe, and motivated to attend and achieve. The school benefits from strong leadership, good behaviour, and a positive atmosphere where relationships and consistency sit at the heart of success.

Job Role
  • Leading whole‑school attendance strategy and driving improvements across all year groups.
  • Managing pastoral teams to ensure high‑quality support, intervention, and safeguarding practice.
  • Overseeing inclusion, ensuring all systems, policies, and pathways meet student needs.
  • Working with parents, external agencies, and staff to remove barriers to attendance and engagement.
  • Coaching and supporting year leaders, pastoral staff, and attendance officer.
  • Using data to monitor trends, implement targeted intervention, and report to SLT and governors.
  • Supporting the wider strategic direction of the school as a key member of the leadership team.
