Job summary

Footprint Forestry is seeking an assistant forest manager to support existing workload and welcome new enquiries. Based in the United Kingdom, the role involves working on commercial conifer forestry as well as ecological and recreational woodland projects for a range of clients, from small woodland owners to large estates.

You will join an experienced team, contribute to woodland assessments, mapping, grant applications, licences, and supervision of harvesting and planting operations.

Qualifications

• Solid forestry and woodland management knowledge.

• Full, clean UK driving licence.
• Relevant forestry qualification.
• ICF membership or working towards Professional Membership Entry.

Responsibilities

• Assist with current projects and liaise with clients and contractors.
• As experience develops, take over projects and new clients.
• Carry out woodland assessment & survey, mapping, reports and woodland management plans.
• Apply for grants and Felling Licences.
• Organise and supervise harvesting, extraction, timber sales, planting/restocking, maintenance and tending.
• Rhododendron control and boundary repairs.

Introduction

Footprint Forestry was established in 2019 by Edward Mills and Christopher Guest. Business has grown rapidly and now the partnership requires an assistant forest manager to help service the existing workload and take on work from new enquiries. We have a wide range of clients from small woodland owners and both small and large estates. Work includes commercial conifer forestry as well as the management of woods with high ecological and recreational value, as well as a good deal of environmentally sensitive work in ancient woodland.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience required

• Diligent and professional in your approach to work and motivated to deliver a high-quality service to clients
• Work well as part of an experienced team, but also be confident in working on your own
• Effective communication skills to liaise with colleagues, clients, contractors and stakeholders
• Proficient in IT systems and experience with Office 365 suite and GIS
• Good knowledge and experience in practical forestry and woodland management
• Good working knowledge of the Countryside Stewardship grant scheme and/or EWCO and UK Forest Standard
• Innovative, enthusiastic and self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills
• Full, clean UK driving licence

Roles and duties

Initially, work is most likely to involve assisting with current projects, including liaison with clients and contractors and checking on progress of projects. However, as experience develops, you will take over some existing projects and take on new clients.

Tasks will involve all aspects of forestry and woodland management including woodland assessment & survey work, mapping, preparation of reports and woodland management plans, making grant applications, applying for Felling Licences, as well as organising and supervising operations such as harvesting and extraction, timber sales, planting and restocking, new planting, maintenance and tending, rhododendron control and boundary repairs.
