Job summary

SSE is seeking an Assistant Engineering Manager to join the Onshore Project Engineering team in Scotland, overseeing Protection & Control Engineers and delivering value-driven engineering for Net Zero projects.

You will lead a team, ensure appropriate resources across portfolios, and promote a safety-focused, collaborative culture while managing consultants and in-house experts.

Qualifications

  • A relevant engineering discipline is required, preferably electrical/electronic.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership is expected.
  • Knowledge of Electrical Transmission sector or similar industry.
  • Experience leading engineering teams and delivering improvements.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, line manage and develop a team of Protection & Control Engineers, supporting performance, growth and career development.
  • Ensure resources are in place across the project portfolio, maximising in-house expertise and managing consultants/contractors.
  • Drive delivery of high-quality, innovative engineering solutions delivering value for money.
  • Promote Safety in Design across projects and ensure CDM Principal Designer/Designer duties are met.
  • Support Network for Net Zero ambitions by coordinating activities and ensuring high-quality outputs.

Base Location

For this role, we require successful applicants to be based from one of our Scottish locations and you'll be expected to spend 50% of your working week in the office - Glasgow, Inverness, Perth, Aberdeen

Salary

£59,800 - £89,800 + car /car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The role

We have a fantastic opportunity for an Assistant Engineering Manager to join our Onshore Project Engineering team and play a key role in delivering innovative and value-adding engineering solutions across our portfolio of projects, supporting the delivery of a Network for Net Zero.

This role will lead and coordinate a team of specialist Protection & Control Engineers, ensuring engineering excellence, developing capability within the team and promoting a collaborative, safety-focused culture. An appreciation of Protection & Control engineering would be beneficial, however this is not essential as the role is primarily focused on leadership, people management and engineering delivery.

You will
  • Lead, line manage and develop a team of Protection & Control Engineers, supporting their performance, growth and career development while building capability across the wider business.
  • Ensure the right engineering resources are in place across the project portfolio, maximising the use of in-house expertise and proactively managing consultants and contractors.
  • Drive the delivery of high-quality, innovative and value-adding engineering solutions that incorporate sound engineering practices and deliver value for money.
  • Promote and manage Safety in Design across the project portfolio, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and the effective delivery of CDM Principal Designer and Designer duties.
  • Support the successful delivery of our Network for Net Zero ambitions by coordinating engineering activities and ensuring consistent, high-quality engineering outputs across projects.
You have
  • A qualification in a relevant engineering discipline, preferably electrical and/or electronic engineering, together with significant experience in a similar environment.
  • Chartered Engineer status, or you are working towards chartership with a relevant professional institution.
  • Knowledge of the Electrical Transmission sector or a comparable industry, with an understanding of both technical and commercial considerations.
  • Experience leading and developing engineering teams, with a passion for supporting others to achieve their potential and delivering continuous improvement.
  • Strong communication, influencing and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain complex technical matters clearly and effectively.
