Qualifications

  • Preferably with knowledge/experience in the Bus or HGV industry.
  • Strong knowledge of Health & Safety (IOSH desirable).

Job description

We're now looking for a motivated and skilled Assistant Engineering Manager to join our team. This is a key role in keeping our fleet safe, reliable, and on the road – making sure our passengers enjoy the best possible service.

Main Purpose of the Role: To control workshop, engineering, and cleaning staff and facilities. To ensure that breakdowns and vehicle changeovers are dealt with promptly and efficiently. To carry out mechanical repairs to all company vehicles, complete Quality Check Audits on repairs and MOT preparations, and ensure all written and electronic documentation is completed to enable the department to operate efficiently.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the workshop on a daily basis in a cost‑effective and safe manner, subject to shift patterns.
  • Minimise lost mileage and downtime to ensure vehicles are available for service.
  • Rectify driver‑reported defects promptly and record all remedial action.
  • Ensure all breakdowns are responded to within 10 minutes of notification, minimising disruption to service.
  • Leave all vehicles in a clean and serviceable condition after workshop attention.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with the Group Engineering Maintenance Manual.
  • Maintain sufficient vehicle availability and liaise with the Traffic team when shortages arise.
  • Ensure security of the building and report any maintenance issues.
  • Report dangerous occurrences, near misses, and passenger injuries to management and authorities where appropriate.
  • Support Health & Safety meetings, lead by example, and ensure compliance with company H&S policies.
  • Carry out the duties of a skilled fitter, including minor body, electrical, and general servicing work.
  • Any other reasonable duties to ensure safe, effective, and efficient operations.
Qualifications
  • Strong engineering background with proven experience in maintenance, repair, and overhaul of heavy vehicles, equipment, or machinery.
  • Preferably with knowledge/experience in the Bus or HGV industry.
  • Recognised apprenticeship or vocational qualification in mechanical/electrical engineering or similar. Degree or diploma in engineering/vehicle maintenance also considered.
  • Strong knowledge of Health & Safety (IOSH desirable).
  • Leadership skills with the ability to supervise, motivate, and develop teams effectively.
