Qualifications

  • Willingness to attend regular site visits and work out-of-hours when required.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to own vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake critical element inspections and surveys.
  • Prepare inspection reports with photographic evidence.
  • Prepare strengthening designs for defective structural elements.
  • Produce drawings and models using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or Revit.
  • Participate in a structured on-call rota.

Assistant Engineer - Rail Reactive Maintenance

Location : London-based (covering Kent, Sussex, and Wessex regions)

Salary : £30,000 to £38,000 depending on experience.

An opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Engineer to join a well-established consultancy delivering reactive maintenance and inspection services across the Southern region. This London-based role offers excellent career development and hands-on project experience across a variety of civil and structural assets.

You’ll support senior engineers with inspections, reporting, and remedial design work while building your technical skills on a long-term, multi-asset framework. Ideal for someone early in their engineering career and looking to grow within a supportive team environment.

Responsibilities
  • Undertake and manage hidden critical element inspections, reactive maintenance inspections, condition and / or structural surveys, and dilapidation surveys.
  • Carry out inspections of civil and structural assets including bridges, stations, canopies, infrastructure buildings, maritime structures, and highways assets.
  • Prepare clear inspection reports with photographic evidence and recommendations.
  • Prepare strengthening designs for defective structural elements, including producing structural calculations, assurance forms, supporting technical documentation and Designer's risk assessments.
  • Produce drawings and models using AutoCAD, MicroStation and / or Revit.
  • Participate in a structured on-call rota to respond to urgent rail infrastructure issues.
  • Attend live railway sites out-of-hours as needed to assess and support safety-critical situations.
