The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is seeking an Assistant Director Seafarer Training, Safety & Health. The MCA implements the government's maritime safety policy in the United Kingdom and works to prevent the loss of life and occurrence of pollution on the coast and at sea.
You will join the Directorate of UK Customer Maritime Services (UKCMS) which oversees several key functions, including the UK Ship Register, Seafarer Services (covering standards, qualifications, certification, medicals, and welfare), the UK Shipping Concierge, Key Account Management, and the Maritime Innovation Hub.
As the Assistant Director Seafarers Training, Safety & Health you will play a pivotal leadership role within UKCMS providing strategic and operational oversight of the Seafarer Technical Delivery Team and the Seafarer Safety and Health section. The role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality services across training, certification, welfare, and medical standards, aligned with MCA and DfT priorities.

As a senior leader, you will foster a culture of accountability, inclusion, and innovation, while maintaining robust workforce planning, financial control, and performance management. The Assistant Director contributes to the strategic direction of the Directorate, supports governance functions, and champions the use of digital and data-driven solutions to improve safety outcomes and customer service.
You will lead the modernisation of seafarer training and health standards, ensuring the UK remains at the forefront of maritime competence and welfare. This includes influencing international conventions such as STCW, STCW(F), MLC, and overseeing the implementation of associated policies and regulations. The post holder is accountable for the administration of seafarer training funding (e.g. SMarT), the development of technical and medical standards, and associated systems.
