Job description
Assistant Design Manager/Engineer – £42,000 + Package – Oxford Street, London

Salary: £42,000 + Package
Location: London
Region: London

Summary of Role:

  • PTS – Desirable
  • CSCS Card – Essential
  • Degree Qualified – Preferred
  • Experience with a Sub/Main Contractor in a Rail/Civil Rail Project for at least 1 year

Station Upgrade with a Main Contractor who are taking full design responsibility. Whilst the majority of the design intent is now complete and the infrastructure work is well underway, there remains a need to manage the interface with the various design organisations and the engineering team on site.

There remain many design packages to close-out including ongoing architectural and highways works and there are subcontractor design elements that require managing through the design integration and approvals process. There is also a need to manage the input of the designers’ representatives on site. Additionally, as with any long project, there is likely to be a significant amount of engineering change that will need managing.

The Assistant Design Manager / Engineer, will work in a team of engineers and architects working for the Engineering Manager, led by the Design Manager. They will take day-to-day responsibility for the management of the delivery of aspects of design information from either the lead designer, or other subcontract organisations that hold design responsibility.

They will be involved in monitoring of programme performance, technical review of submissions, review of interdisciplinary integration developing solutions for design issues and management of formal submissions to the Client.

They will also be involved in the management of queries and responses (RFIs and NCRs) between the Client, site and subcontract designers.

There will also be the opportunity to work with the construction, planning and engineering teams in identifying, evaluating and implementing value engineering and risk reduction strategies.

Whilst the role will be predominantly office based, there will be a need to visit the work-site on a regular basis.

The role will involve extensive use of the project extranet and contract management system (Asite). As such an aptitude for use of software packages is needed, but no specific experience of the system is required as any specific training and mentoring will be given on site.

The role will inevitably require involvement with many different engineering and architectural disciplines; specialist knowledge is not required, but an attention to detail along with a willingness to learn and to challenge is required. Communication will be a key part of this role and the ability to convey ideas equally well in writing, orally and visually is needed. Good engineering judgement is also required, as is the ability to analyse engineering problems from their fundamentals using logical process. Some engineering and an architectural experience is required, but the ability to use engineering fundamentals is more important.
