Job description

Assistant Commissioning Engineer - South West Water
Location - Plymouth

An opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Commissioning Engineer to join the team at Galliford Try within our Environment Business.

Ideally, you will be based in or around the Plymouth area and will have the opportunity to travel across multiple sites/projects in the Region.

You will work on our Capital Maintenance Water Frameworks within our Environment Business, who are experienced in successfully delivering schemes of varying sizes, predominantly to the Water Industry, across both Wastewater and Clean Water Treatment schemes.

What you will be doing:

As an Assistant Commissioning Engineer you will help make sure newly installed and modified water and wastewater treatment systems work safely and efficiently, meet the project specification and meet client requirements before handover.

You will be site based and paired with an experienced Commissioning Engineer as your mentor. Together you will test and troubleshoot new and modified equipment, write reports, and make sure every component works as it should. You will follow our Structured Training Framework (STF), which gives you a formal record of your training and competence. Once you complete the training modules and show competence, you will move up to full Commissioning Engineer.

Design to Commission sits at the heart of how we work. You will help develop the Project Commissioning Plan, Commissioning Strategy and commissioning documentation, from an outline strategy at early design through to a detailed plan at project award. You will provide regular MEICA & Commissioning status reports and help keep the commissioning programme up to date within the main contract programme, working with the planner.

You will help organise and supervise testing and commissioning, including supply chain packages, Plant in Operation commissioning, and witness testing of FATs and functional tests. You will check that MEICA installations meet client specifications, Asset Standards and, where relevant, WIMES, and that Galliford Try processes and procedures are followed.

You will work with the client's Asset Operations Team to keep new works integrated with existing assets, and with the client's Asset Integrator to agree the takeover deliverables list. You will also work with specialist teams, including DSEAR Hazardous Areas, Technical Authors and Document Controllers, and make sure O&M information from subcontractors reaches document control.

You will support the Project Manager with a successful handover by managing snags and defects collaboratively, clearing outstanding works while contractors are still on site, and showing that quality criteria are met through the performance test process.

Safety is part of every task. You will learn to put in place and maintain MEICA safe systems of work, help apply the Electrical & Mechanical safety rules, and regularly assess new risks and hazards on your projects.

About you:
  • Able to read and work from engineering drawings, and apply safety regulations and site admin
  • Enjoy troubleshooting and finding solutions to technical problems
  • Clear verbal and written communication, for working with a wide range of stakeholders and writing reports
  • A hands-on approach and a keen interest in learning new skills
  • Happy to travel and stay overnight on occasion, as work is split between office and site
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel, for reporting
  • 5 GCSEs at Grade C / 4 or above, including Maths, English and Science
  • Full UK driving licence
  • CSCS or ECS card in a relevant discipline
  • SSSTS as a minimum
Desirable:
  • Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent in Mechanical, Electrical or a related discipline
  • SMSTS
  • EUSR National Water Hygiene Card
  • First Aid at Work
  • An understanding of water and wastewater treatment processes
