Job description
Aspiring Youth Justice Officer - Learning Support Assistant Hillingdon - Education and Training

Start Date: 10th November Full-time Term Time Only

Are you passionate about supporting children whose lives have been shaped by trauma, anxiety, and school avoidance? Are you hoping to build the hands‑on experience needed for a future career in Youth Justice, Probation, Forensic Psychology, or Social Care?

This role offers a unique opportunity to work in a specialist SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) primary school in Hillingdon - supporting pupils with complex emotional needs, trauma backgrounds, and neurodivergent profiles including Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) and Autism. Many of these children may have experienced disrupted education, attachment difficulties, or early life adversity, making this role a vital part of their recovery and re‑engagement journey.

The Role
  • Build safe, trusting relationships with children who may struggle with authority or traditional learning environments.
  • Provide 1:1 and small‑group support, both academically and therapeutically, to children experiencing trauma, anxiety, and avoidance behaviours.
  • Use trauma‑informed and relational approaches to reduce distress, prevent crisis escalation, and re‑engage pupils with learning.
  • Support children who are at risk of school avoidance, exclusion, or early involvement with the justice system, helping them develop emotional regulation and a sense of belonging.
  • Implement restorative and low‑demand strategies to support pupils with PDA profiles, fostering trust and collaboration rather than compliance.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and pastoral staff to create a nurturing, emotionally safe environment where progress is celebrated at every level.
What We're Looking For
  • Graduates (or those soon to graduate) in Psychology, Criminology, Youth & Community Work, Education, or Social Sciences.
  • Individuals with experience or interest in trauma recovery, behaviour support, or youth work.
  • Empathetic, calm, and resilient personalities who can maintain a sense of safety and structure in challenging situations.
  • A genuine commitment to understanding the root causes of behaviour and helping young people find new pathways forward.
  • Experience with SEMH, Autism, or PDA is desirable - full training and ongoing support will be provided.
Why This Role?
  • Gain frontline, trauma‑informed experience highly valued in careers across Youth Justice, Probation, Forensic Psychology, and Social Work.
  • Work in a therapeutic setting where every interaction matters, and every day offers a chance to rebuild trust.
  • Receive training in Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), restorative practice, de‑escalation, and low‑arousal approaches.
  • Join a nurturing, professional team that prioritises emotional safety, reflective practice, and wellbeing.
  • Opportunity for a permanent role after the summer term.
