About the Apprenticeship

This position is within the TOpS Marker Recruitment and Contracting Team at Pearson. The department are responsible for the recruitment and contracting of Key Stage 2 markers. Markers of all levels perform many different roles across Key Stage 2 English Reading, English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling and Mathematics qualifications, some examples are below:

  • Marking Programme Leader
  • Deputy Marking Programme Leader
  • Senior Marker
  • Team Leader
  • Specialist Marker
  • Regular Marker
  • Clerical Marker

You will be enrolled in Level 3 Business Administration, which will help you develop your skills and knowledge, and can take up to 18 Months to complete.

About the Role

The Recruitment and Contracting Apprentice is responsible for ensuring that sufficient Markers are recruited and deployed to meet forecasted demand for the TOpS/National Curriculum Assessments. The post holder will also work closely with the wider Recruitment team to ensure that all Markers are effectively contracted and available to meet target requirements across their assigned areas.

This role is business‑critical and plays an essential part in the successful delivery of each contracting period. Team members must remain focused and organised while working to tight deadlines and managing shifting priorities. The role requires balancing multiple responsibilities - from meeting deployment targets and addressing customer queries to acting as a subject‑specific contact and responding promptly to urgent situations that may arise during the testing period.

Key skills and competencies
  • Organise and manage recruitment campaigns for all Marker positions.
  • Assist with internal teams and stakeholders on recruitment needs, providing advice and building effective relationships.
  • Advise potential applicants on Marker roles and ensure knowledge of Gateway to support them and set up new roles.
  • Work with the Recruitment and Contracting Team to anticipate demand and monitor applications for priority subjects.
  • Contribute to the Marker recruitment and retention strategy.
  • Ensure consistent customer service, resolving escalations and complaints in line with SLAs.
  • Review regular and ad hoc management information (MI).
  • Support contracting, deployment, and allocation of Markers within deadlines and forecast requirements.
  • Issue and track contracts to ensure full coverage, following up on non‑replies and withdrawals.
  • Build collaborative relationships with stakeholders (e.g., STA) and maintain accurate data across systems, including Gateway.
  • Handle routine application enquiries and liaise with internal customers regarding Markers.
  • Support the end-to-end recruitment process, including applicant support and reference checks.
  • Assist with ad hoc contracting or deployment support during peak periods or absences.
  • Collaborate with other business areas to achieve overall objectives.

  • Ensuring a sufficient pipeline of qualified applicants to meet recruitment and deployment demands.

Job Location and Hours

This role is based at our Rotherham office, located at Hellaby Business Park, Fretwell Road, Rotherham, S66 8HN.

The standard working pattern is 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday during regular office hours. However, flexibility is required during busy periods, which may occasionally include weekend work. Overtime may be compensated either through payment or time off in lieu.

We aim to support a healthy work‑life balance and can accommodate personal commitments such as school runs. Alternative working patterns, including part‑time or non‑traditional hours, can also be considered.
