Job summary

Galliford Try is offering an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor 2027 position in the West Midlands, Birmingham and Solihull region. The programme delivers hands-on commercial experience, funded academic study, and a structured Trainee Development Programme over 18 months, with a pathway to a permanent role on completion.

The role starts Summer 2027 or earlier, with full-time study alongside on-site work, and potential travel to other projects.

Responsibilities

• Participate in creating a safe working environment.
• Use Oracle software tools to support accurate reporting of costs and value to the business unit.
• Assist in interpreting and evaluating expenditure reports from internal cost systems.
• Involve in the procurement of Subcontract partners including bid enquiry documentation and bid evaluation.
• Draft Subcontract documentation.
• Apply the principles of Doing the right thing to maximise value and profit.
• Support subcontract administration including interim assessments and change management.
• Assist in producing commercial notices to Client and Subcontractors as required by contract and law.
• Assist in change management including Compensation Event Quotations and schedules of value.
• Provide information to the Commercial team for monthly payment applications.
• Liaise with site staff to maintain records.
• Collate data to support detailed cost-to-complete schedules and Subcontractor liabilities.

Will you complete a qualification during your apprenticeship?

When you join us as an apprentice, you will:

• Complete an apprenticeship qualification relevant to the role, to suit your current education level. At the end of the programme, you will gain a nationally recognised qualification in this field as well as learning the practical skills and hands‑on experience in a supportive environment.
• Join us on our Trainee Development Programme, where you will be given the training and tools to develop your skills through a series of modules over an 18-month period followed by a graduation event.

We offer apprenticeships from a level 3 to a degree level apprenticeship fully funded by Galliford Try, tailored to your current education level and course entry requirements.

This role is available for a Summer 2027 start, with the possibility of an earlier start date to suit yourself and the business.

What could your day look like?

As an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor, you will work closely with your line manager to assist in the commercial administration, reporting and performance on a single large project or several small schemes.

You will:

• Participate in creating a safe working environment.
• Use the latest Oracle software tools to support accurate reporting of costs and value to the business unit.
• Assist in the interpretation and critical evaluation of expenditure reports produced by internal cost systems.
• Be involved in the procurement of Subcontract partners including preparation of bid enquiry documentation and critical evaluation of bids.
• Draft Subcontract documentation.
• Apply the principles of ‘Doing the right thing’ in maximising value and profit.
• Support the administration of subcontract works packages including, interim assessments of the amount due and change management.
• Assist in the production and issue of commercial notices, to both the Client and Subcontractors, as required by the form of contract and the law.
• Assist in the management of change in accordance with the form of contract, including the production and submission of Compensation Event Quotations and the maintenance of detailed schedules of value.
• Provide information to the Commercial team to assist in the production of monthly payment applications to the Client.
• Liaise with operational and engineering staff to maintain site records.
• Collate and calculate information required to assist the Commercial team in the production and maintenance of a detailed ‘cost to complete’ including schedules of Subcontractor ‘liabilities’.

As part of the apprenticeship programme you will be expected to work in and around the location advertised, with the possibility for expanding travel to other projects and locations in the future. This may include staying away from home.
