Job description

We are looking for a Heavy Vehicle Engineer Apprentice to join us here at Bristol Airport. As an Apprentice Motor Transport Engineer, you will learn to perform essential automotive and preventative maintenance, carry out repairs and technical services on a range of our airport vehicles every day.

Responsibilities
  • Assist and learn service and repair maintenance tasks on a wide range of airport vehicles including, but not limited to Ground
  • Support Equipment, Buses, Fire Vehicles, Snow Clearing Equipment, and light and heavy vehicles including 4X4's and Agricultural Equipment
  • Learn and use a fleet management system
  • Work closely with in accordance with BAL H&S policy
  • Undertake driving duties on and off site to assist with Motor Transport Department Learn how to conduct emergency repairs, heavy recoveries, and snow equipment repairs, Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes
  • Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately
  • Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV's
  • Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester's manual
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision
  • Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes
  • Maintain records to company and operators' licence obligations and regulation
Qualifications
  • The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
  • The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers' standards.
  • To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.

Apprenticeship Details

This is a 3 year Apprenticeship delivered as block release. The College element is for 5x 2 week blocks per year. The work based units will start from January 2026.

Compensation & Benefits

£23,088 a year. If you are over 19, your yearly salary will be higher as the hours of work based on shift work will be 39.22 per week. Salary is reviewed yearly. Training course Heavy vehicle service and maintenance technician (level 3). Hours If you are aged 19 or over, the role is shift based, meaning you'll work 4 12-hour day shifts, 06.00 - 18.00 hours followed by four days off. If you're under the age of 19, you'll work Monday - Friday 08.00 - 16.00 hours. 37 hours a week. Start date Monday 5 January 2026. Duration 3 years.
