Job description
Overview

As an apprentice mobile mechanic, you will complete services, repairs, and diagnostics at customers\' homes or workplaces, offering a diverse range of experiences.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare the vehicle and working area before the work activity, e.g. remove or mitigate slip and trip hazards; maintain and restore the work area during and on completion of the activity.
  • Store, maintain (including calibration checks), and return tools and equipment to storage; access vehicle technical data to inform inspections and make judgments on wear and serviceability.
  • Comply with health and safety procedures, environmental and sustainability procedures, regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Apply vehicle safety inspection and routine maintenance procedures using vehicle specific data on cars, car derived vans, or light goods vehicles; select and use tools and equipment, including mechanical and electrical measuring tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Remove, repair and replace vehicle tyres and balance wheel assemblies; inspect, remove, and replace parts or components in relevant systems (steering, suspension, braking, emission, air conditioning, battery/charging, fluids and filtration).
  • Apply state-of-health condition monitoring tests to high voltage batteries and chargers for electrified vehicles; perform four-wheel geometry checks and adjustments; apply safe working practices to isolate electrified vehicles for maintenance.
  • Record vehicle service maintenance, parts replacement, or repair; apply customer service principles, identify customer and vehicle needs, resolve low-level complaints, and make recommendations based on inspection results.
  • Provide quotations for parts and consumables; apply stock and parts storage procedures (ordering, checking, stock rotation); follow organisational sales processes (e.g., features and benefits, consultative selling, closing).
  • Communicate with customers, suppliers, and colleagues (verbal and written); use information and digital technology systems; comply with GDPR and cyber security; complete learning and development activities.
  • Work as part of a team and comply with equity, diversity, and inclusion guidance.
Training and Schedule

Training schedule: During your apprenticeship you will complete a mix of college learning and on-the-job training. The role is based in Enfield with block college attendance; you will work towards achieving the Level 2 Autocare Technician apprenticeship. The programme combines college learning with hands-on training, with supervision from experienced leaders. You will gain experience in diagnostics, repairs, servicing, checks, and on-the-spot decision making.

The North London Garages training officers and RAC mentors will monitor your competence regularly as part of a close support network to ensure you succeed.

Salary, Hours and Progression

Wage: £15,500 per year in the first year, increasing to the National Living Wage in the second year (plus a £5,000 London Weighting Allowance if applicable).

Hours: approximately 40 hours per week; start date Monday 2 February 2026; duration 2 years.

After successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to apply for full-time employment as a Mobile Mechanic, with a competitive salary starting at £38,625 (OTE £53k+).

Additional Notes

This role involves driving a company van to and from breakdown locations. Some prior work experience is advantageous but not essential. Details about hours, college attendance, and location will be discussed at the employer interview.
