Job summary

GTG Training invites applications for an Apprentice HGV Mechanic at Manor Farm/Four Ashes in Wolverhampton. This three-year, paid apprenticeship blends college learning with hands-on workshop experience at our GTG Training Academy, with a 40-hour week schedule.

You will service, diagnose and repair heavy vehicles under supervision, attend block-release training and gain Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair, supported by ongoing assessments and career development.

Qualifications

  • GCSEs in English and Maths as required by the apprenticeship provider.
  • Eligibility to undertake a UK apprenticeship.
  • Attend college/training-provider sessions as required.
  • A driving licence is desirable but not essential at the start.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and complete college and workplace training.
  • Assist qualified technicians with routine servicing and repairs.
  • Learn to diagnose mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic faults.
  • Assist with maintaining and repairing engines, brakes, steering and EV systems.
  • Complete job cards and maintenance records accurately.
  • Follow health and safety procedures and use PPE.

Job title: Apprentice HGV Mechanic Department: Workshop / Fleet Maintenance Reports to: Workshop Manager or Senior HGV Technician Location: Manor Farm / Four Ashes Working hours: 08:00 – 17:00 Monday to Friday. 08:00 – 13:00 Saturday

Job Purpose

To undertake a recognised apprenticeship in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair while gaining practical workshop experience under the supervision of qualified technicians. The apprentice will assist with inspecting, servicing, diagnosing and repairing HGVs and associated equipment, while following company procedures and health and safety requirements.

Main Duties And Responsibilities
  • Attend and complete all required college, training-provider and workplace training.
  • Work towards the relevant Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician apprenticeship qualification.
  • Assist qualified technicians with routine servicing, inspections and repairs.
  • Learn to diagnose mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic faults.
  • Assist with maintaining and repairing:
  • Engines and transmission systems
  • Braking and air systems
  • Steering and suspension
  • Electrical and electronic systems
  • Emissions and exhaust systems
  • Trailers, tail-lifts and ancillary equipment
  • Carry out basic maintenance tasks appropriate to the apprentice’s competence and level of supervision.
  • Learn to use diagnostic equipment, workshop tools and vehicle lifting equipment safely.
  • Complete job cards, inspection sheets and maintenance records accurately.
  • Report defects, damage and unsafe conditions to the supervising technician or Workshop Manager.
  • Keep tools, equipment and work areas clean, secure and well maintained.
  • Assist with vehicle preparation for MOT tests and statutory inspections.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions, company maintenance procedures and DVSA requirements.
  • Comply with health and safety, environmental and waste-disposal procedures.
  • Wear the required personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain satisfactory attendance, punctuality and progress throughout the apprenticeship.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties appropriate to the apprenticeship.

Qualifications And Requirements

  • Ability to attend college or training-provider sessions as required.
  • A driving licence is desirable but not essential at the start of the apprenticeship.
  • Any driving or road testing must only be undertaken when appropriately licensed, authorised, insured and supervised.
Working conditions
The Role Is Mainly Workshop-based And May Involve
  • Working beneath or around large commercial vehicles.
  • Manual handling and the use of mechanical lifting aids.
  • Exposure to noise, oils, fuels, dirt and vehicle exhaust emissions.
  • Working outdoors or attending vehicle breakdowns when suitably trained and supervised.
  • Wearing overalls, safety footwear, gloves, eye protection and other required PPE.
