Job summary

Harringtons Builders PLC is offering an 18‑month Groundworker apprenticeship across residential and civil projects. You will learn on site outdoors, support groundworks, excavation and concrete tasks while training toward your Level 2 Groundworker qualification.

You must have GCSEs in English and Maths; CSCS card is preferred; expect early starts, physical work and travel to sites. Training is delivered via NCC East with on‑site learning between blocks.

Qualifications

• GCSE Grade 3/D (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
• If you already have relevant experience or qualifications, training plan may be adjusted.

Responsibilities

• Site preparation — clearing land, marking out work areas and supporting initial groundworks
• Excavation — digging trenches for foundations, drainage and utilities
• Concrete and surfacing — assisting with laying concrete, kerbs, paving and other hard-surface materials
• Drainage installation — helping install pipes, ducting and underground services
• Tools and machinery — using hand tools and small plant under supervision
• Materials handling — loading, unloading and organising materials
• Following instructions from supervisors and working to site plans
• Maintaining a clean, safe working environment
• Adhering to all health and safety requirements

Training provider: National Construction College East (NCC East) – Residential 2‑week block release Course: Groundworker (Level 2)

Annual wage: TBC – (at least Minimum wage for age)

Working week: 40 hours (final pattern confirmed at interview)

Expected start date: Summer 2027

Apprenticeship duration: 18 months

Positions available: 10

What you will do

As an Apprentice Groundworker with Harringtons Builders PLC, you will support the preparation and delivery of groundworks on residential and infrastructure projects. You will work outdoors, learn practical skills, and gain experience alongside qualified operatives while working towards your Level 2 Groundworker qualification.

Your duties will include:

• Site preparation — clearing land, marking out work areas and supporting initial groundworks
• Excavation — digging trenches for foundations, drainage and utilities
• Concrete and surfacing — assisting with laying concrete, kerbs, paving and other hard‑surface materials

Where you will work

You will work across Harringtons Builders PLC’s residential and civil engineering sites, mainly outdoors and in all weather conditions. Travel to different sites may be required.

Training

Training is delivered by National Construction College East through residential 2‑week block release. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training.

Please note you will need to complete a Health and Safety test before you can go on site.

You will complete:

• Practical and theory training at NCC East
• On‑site learning with Harringtons Builders PLC between blocks
• End‑Point Assessment preparation during your final college block

Entry requirements
