Job description

Job Title: Apprentice Floorlayer (Textile & Resilient) – ST0504

Employer: Bradbury Flooring

Location: Leicester & Midlands (site-based)

Hours: Full time, site based with block release training

Pay: £7.55 per hour

Description of what the apprentice will do in their role

As a Floorlaying Apprentice with Bradbury Flooring, you will work alongside experienced craftspersons across commercial, institutional and contract flooring projects throughout the Midlands. Your role will involve a mix of practical, on-site work and classroom/block release learning.

On site duties will include (but are not limited to):
  • Subfloor preparation — assisting with cleaning, leveling, and preparing the substrate for installation (removing old coverings, filling low spots, priming, applying screeds or smoothing compounds).
  • Moisture and damp control tasks — helping with damp proof membranes, moisture testing, and remedial works.
  • Measuring, marking & cutting — using tapes, straight edges, templates to measure and mark out flooring materials (carpet sheets, tiles, vinyl rolls, linoleum, rubber).
  • Carpet installation — laying carpet rolls, carpet tiles, underlays, trimming to fit, stretching, joining, matching pattern, fixing edges and trims.
  • Resilient flooring installation — handling sheet vinyl, vinyl tiles, linoleum, rubber, welding or seaming joints, taping, positioning upstands, coved edges, trims, thresholds.
  • Finishing & detailing — installing skirtings, profiles, cover strips, stair nosings, trims, sealing and applying protection to newly laid floors.
  • Site housekeeping & safety — maintaining a tidy work area, disposing of waste material responsibly, observing site health & safety procedures, using PPE, securing materials and tools.
  • Client liaison & quality checks — assisting senior installers in checking completed work, inspecting for defects, reporting to supervisors, helping with handover preparation.
During your apprenticeship, under the block release scheme with WEBS, you will:
  • Attend block release sessions (e.g. a week every 8–12 weeks) for off-the-job instruction.
  • Learn the underpinning theory: material science, industry standards, safety regulations, manufacturer specifications, specification reading, drawing interpretation, calculations and estimating, environmental and sustainability considerations.
  • Undertake workshops and controlled practical sessions in a training centre environment, working with carpets, vinyl, linoleum and rubber, under guided supervision.
  • Complete assessments, assignments and coursework related to the ST0504 standard, including knowledge exams and practical skill demonstrations.
Comprehensive Training

We will support you to fully achieve the Level 2 Floorlayer apprenticeship (Textile & Resilient) ST0504, with the following components:

  • On-the-job training with hands‑on mentorship under experienced floorlayers.
  • Off-job training through block release sessions at a training provider (via WEBS).
  • Structured syllabus covering both theory and practical skills: subfloor prep, material types, installation techniques, finishing, health & safety, client care, specification reading, calculations, waste management.
  • Internal mentoring, periodic reviews, feedback sessions, and progression tracking.
  • Preparation and support for end‑point assessment (EPA), including demonstration of competence, professional discussion or viva, and knowledge tests as required by the standard.
  • English, Maths or Functional Skills support if required (unless exempt).
Career Progression and Opportunities
  • Transition to a fully employed Floorlayer / Installer role with Bradbury Flooring.
  • Specialisation in certain flooring materials (e.g. commercial vinyl, safety flooring, acoustic installations).
  • Progression to a Supervisor / Lead Installer / Contracts Manager role.
  • Further training in estimating, planning, project management, or complementary trades (e.g. subflooring, screeding).
  • Opportunity to gain industry certifications, NVQs, or membership credentials (e.g. via the Contract Flooring Association) to enhance your professional credentials.

We expect the successful apprentice to stay with Bradbury Flooring after qualification and grow within the company.

Desired Skills and Personal Qualities

We are seeking someone with the following:

  • A genuine interest in practical, hands‑on work, and a passion for craftsmanship.
  • Good attention to detail and precision — in measuring, cutting, aligning, finishing.
  • Basic numeracy skills (measuring, calculation) and willingness to improve.
  • Ability to follow instructions, learn quickly, take feedback, and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills — able to work with colleagues, supervisors, clients, and other trades on site.
  • Reliability, punctuality, strong work ethic, professionalism, and a positive attitude.
  • Physical fitness and manual dexterity (lifting rolls, kneeling, bending, handling tools).
  • A commitment to health & safety and safe working practices.
  • (Desirable, though not essential) GCSEs in English and Maths (grade C/4 or above) — or willingness to complete Functional Skills.
  • A full UK driving licence (or ability to travel to sites and training) is beneficial.

No prior floorlaying experience is required — full training will be provided.
