Job summary

Barrington James is recruiting an experienced Contract Animal Technician in London to join a leading research organisation on a temporary basis. The role focuses on mouse husbandry, transgenic breeding, and day‑to‑day facility operations within a busy laboratory environment.

You will perform routine welfare checks, cage changes, health observations, ear notching, and colony management with strong compliance and record‑keeping.

Qualifications

• 2+ years' industry experience in animal facilities.
• Strong mouse husbandry and transgenic breeding experience.
• Experience with animal management/databases.
• PIL A/B or equivalent Home Office licence experience.
• Experience carrying out Schedule 1 procedures.

Contract Animal Technician – Transgenic Mouse Breeding

Temporary/Contract

We are working with a leading research organisation to recruit an experienced Animal Technician to join their established laboratory animal facility on a contract basis.

This is an excellent opportunity for an Animal Technician with strong mouse husbandry and transgenic breeding experience to join a busy research environment and support the day-to-day running of the animal facility.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out day-to-day mouse and rat husbandry, ensuring high standards of welfare and care.
• Support and maintain transgenic mouse breeding colonies, including breeding schedules and colony management.
• Perform routine health checks, cage changes and animal observations.
• Carry out ear notching for identification in accordance with established procedures.
• Undertake cage wash and associated facility duties.
• Maintain accurate animal records and update animal management databases.
• Work independently while maintaining high standards of animal welfare, compliance and record keeping.
• Follow relevant SOPs, legislation and institutional procedures.
• Previous experience working as an Animal Technician within a research or laboratory animal environment.
• Hands‑on mouse and rat husbandry experience.
• Experience managing or supporting transgenic mouse breeding colonies.
• Ability to work independently and unsupervised.
• Experience using animal management/colony databases.
• Experience with cage changing, cage wash and routine facility tasks.
• Good understanding of laboratory animal welfare and relevant legislation.
• PIL A/B or equivalent Home Office personal licence experience.
• Experience carrying out Schedule 1 procedures.
• Previous experience within an academic research, pharmaceutical, biotech or CRO environment.

This role would suit an experienced Animal Technician with around 2+ years' industry experience who is confident working independently and has strong practical experience with mouse colonies and husbandry.
