Job summary

RNN Group is seeking an enthusiastic RES Animal Care Technician at Dearne Valley College, Rotherham. This part-time role covers weekends and holidays, supporting learners and maintaining high standards of animal care.

You will supervise practical sessions, assist with stock and equipment, and help ensure all animals receive year‑round care. The position involves indoor and outdoor work with various species.

Qualifications

  • Must have Level 2 English and Maths.
  • Level 3 or higher in Animal Care.
  • Emergency First Aid and Health & Safety training (or willing to undertake).
  • Experience in an animal establishment with multiple species.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise learners during practical sessions and work experience.
  • Assist Lead Technician with stock control and equipment prep.
  • Ensure year‑round care for all animals and provide cover as needed.
  • Support demonstrations and select indoor/outdoor work as required.

RES Animal Care Technician

Hours: Part time - weekend and holiday cover

Times: Variable

Duration: Temporary until July 2027

Salary: £13.23 per hour plus holiday pay

Location: Dearne Valley College, Rotherham

Rotherham Education Services (RES) supply casual and temporary staffing to the RNN Group. The RNN Group consists of Rotherham, Dearne Valley and North Notts colleges.

The Role

As an Animal Care Technician, you are the backbone of our daily operations. You aren't just "feeding and cleaning"-you are the primary observer of our residents' health and happiness. You'll ensure our facility runs like a well-oiled machine while providing the high-standard care our animals rely on.

You will be responsible for the supervision of learners during practical sessions and learners on work experience supporting tutors where necessary. You will ensure all of our animals are provided with full year-round care for all animals and any cover arrangements. This role includes both indoor and outdoor work.

You will assist the Lead Technician in managing stock control for animal and land-based resources and ensure the safe preparation and setting out of equipment and materials for practical work and demonstrations within the curriculum area. You may be required to assist these demonstrations.

Hours of work will be during weekends and covering holidays.

Have you got what it takes to be successful?

You will have experience of working within an animal establishment with a range of different species including small rodents and reptiles.

You will hold a Level 2 (or equivalent) qualification in English and Maths and have a level 3 or above animal care qualification. You should have certification (or be willing to undertake) in Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety training.
