Overview
The Anaesthetic ODP/Nurse will be integral to emergency services, participating in an on‑call rota to support urgent cases. The position entails working a flexible shift pattern – a mix of early shifts, late shifts, extended long days, and occasional weekends – to meet the needs of the Cath Lab service. The successful candidate will be a dynamic, highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills and a teamwork‑oriented approach, committed to delivering exceptional care in a fast‑paced specialist setting.
Location: Cromwell Hospital, a major international private hospital in West London with 180 beds, 4 suites, 6 theatres, medical and surgical wards, cardiac centre, CDU, level 2 and level 3 intensive care facilities, paediatrics, diagnostic services, physiotherapy, and a dedicated day surgery unit.
Responsibilities
- Provide skilled assistance to the anaesthetist during induction, maintenance, and emergence from anaesthesia – including preparing airway devices, intubation assistance, securing invasive lines and monitoring the patient’s condition. Monitor vital signs and anaesthetic depth throughout procedures, responding promptly to any changes or signs of distress to ensure patient safety.
- Prepare, check, and set up all anaesthetic equipment and medications prior to each procedure.
- Maintain stock of drugs and consumables, handling and administering medications, including controlled drugs, in line with hospital policies and protocols.
- Work in close collaboration with the Cath Lab multidisciplinary team (cardiologists, interventional radiologists, anaesthetists, cardiac physiologists, radiographers, and nursing staff) to ensure seamless, high‑quality patient care.
- Assist with pre‑procedure preparation, confirming that patients are appropriately assessed, consented and ready for their procedure. Participate in the safe transfer and positioning of patients onto the procedure table, protecting pressure areas and maintaining patient comfort.
- When procedures are carried out under local anaesthesia or conscious sedation, assist in planning and delivering safe sedation and analgesia, administer sedatives and pain relief medications as required and monitor the patient’s level of consciousness, cardiorespiratory status and comfort. Intervene promptly if deeper sedation or adverse reactions occur and document observations and drugs given.
- Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control standards in the Cath Lab environment – clean and decontaminate all anaesthetic and monitoring equipment between cases to prevent cross‑infection and observe radiation safety protocols at all times.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive clinical documentation for each case, recording any variances, complications or changes in patient condition in a clear, timely manner. Ensure all records meet legal, professional and organisational requirements for confidentiality and completeness.
- Be prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to any intra‑procedure emergencies or patient deterioration – participate actively in resuscitation efforts in accordance with Advanced Life Support guidelines.
- Contribute to the effective day‑to‑day running of the Cath Lab lists – anticipate the needs of each list by preparing necessary equipment and drugs for upcoming cases and ensuring rapid turnover between cases.

- Experience in cardiac catheterisation and interventional radiology environments.

- Diploma of Higher Education or BSc in Operating Department Practice, or BSc Nursing (or equivalent qualification) relevant to perioperative care.
