Job description

Lone Star Analysis is transforming the way leaders make decisions by bringing world-beating data analytics and AI to previously unsolvable problems.

We're looking for an Analyst – Data Science who will work with our clients and subject matter experts to build the predictive and prescriptive models and simulations behind our decision support tools.

If you're passionate about data analytics, mathematics, engineering, or software development and have a degree or relevant experience in these fields, we'd love to hear from you.

Company Overview

Lone Star Analysis UK is a start-up focused on transforming the way leaders make decisions. Bringing world-beating AI techniques to previously unsolvable problems, we are the UK affiliate of Lone Star Aerospace based in the United States. Since 2004, organisations in the US have trusted Lone Star to deliver actionable answers to complex problems in energy, defence, logistics, manufacturing, aerospace, transportation, and more.

We're already working in the UK across healthcare, defence, and sustainability to bring decision support solutions that help customers make smarter decisions faster. We combine predictive and prescriptive analytics, AI, and the experience of our people to enhance innovation, create economic strength, and make the world safer.

The Opportunity and What You’ll Do

The priority for this role is decision support tools development.

What we deliver varies by client. Sometimes it is the answer: analysis, forecasts and recommendations our analysts produce on our platform and deliver as outputs. Sometimes it is the tool: a decision support application built on the platform that the client's own users work with. The platform underpins both, and this role works on both.

Depending on the project, the work leans towards Python data science, building models with the standard scientific libraries, or towards getting those models onto the platform, whether we run them for the client or the client runs them. You will work alongside our analysts and our platform developers.

Decision Support Tools Development
  • Leveraging proprietary and open-source software to build and develop predictive and prescriptive models and simulations that address client-specific questions and decision‑making needs.
  • Engaging with the client to identify and collate data required to populate the models and generate accurate simulations.
  • Conducting in-depth data analysis, including simulations and forecasts, to provide valuable insights for clients.
  • Ensuring that models are specifically customised for each client's requirements.
  • Testing models and tools to ensure that they function as expected and meet the client's requirements before deployment.
Client Engagement
  • Engaging with clients to gain a deep understanding of their business objectives, challenges, and optimisation requirements.
  • Identifying critical business questions or problems that can be solved with decision support tools, focusing on the client's strategic needs.
  • Collecting detailed requirements from clients to ensure that the decision support tools and models align with their specific needs and business processes.
  • Using data analysis to provide actionable insights and strategic recommendations, helping clients make informed, data‑driven decisions.
Project
  • Leading or participating in client meetings to provide project updates, gather feedback, and address client needs or concerns. Ensuring strong communication and collaboration between the client and internal teams.
  • Working closely with the analyst team to ensure the smooth implementation and execution of projects.
  • Gathering and integrating client feedback into models and tools, refining and improving the solutions to better meet client expectations and drive efficiency.
Policy Adherence & Compliance
  • Ensuring that all client engagement, model development, and project management activities comply with company policies, procedures, and industry standards.
  • Complying with documented procedures and actively reporting process deviations or quality concerns to supervisors.
  • Adhering to relevant data privacy laws (e.g., GDPR) and ensuring that all client data is handled securely and in compliance with organisational policies.
  • Maintaining high standards of quality for all decision support tools and models, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and with the expected level of accuracy.
Key Skills

The skills listed below are relevant to the role but are not all essential. You do not need to meet every criterion to apply, and candidates will be considered based on their overall skills, experience and suitability for the role.

  • Strong Python for data analysis and modelling (e.g. pandas, NumPy, SciPy, scikit-learn or similar)
  • Strong SQL, including querying, joining and aggregating data across relational databases
  • Experience ingesting, cleaning and transforming data from varied sources into a usable form
  • Solid grounding in at least one of simulation, optimisation, statistical forecasting or machine learning, with willingness to develop across the others
  • Writing maintainable, tested Python suitable for use in a product back end, not just notebooks
  • Use of Git and collaborative development practices (code review, branching)
  • Ability to translate a client’s business problem into an analytical question and an appropriate modelling approach
  • Excellent communication, including explaining technical findings and model limitations to non-technical audiences
  • Understanding of clients’ business objectives, challenges and optimisation requirements, and the business questions decision support tools can answer
  • Methodical approach to testing, validation and quality
  • Ability to manage own workload across analysis, development and client work
  • Ability and willingness to travel to client sites (T&S paid)
Nice-to-have Skills
  • Experience in more than one of simulation, optimisation, statistical forecasting or machine learning
  • Experience building APIs or back-end services in Python (e.g. FastAPI)
  • Experience presenting to clients or senior stakeholders
  • Experience collecting detailed requirements from clients so that decision support tools and models align with their needs and business processes
  • Understanding of secure handling of data

Degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, statistics or a similar quantitative discipline, or equivalent experience
