Job summary

One Hatfield Hospital, part of Phoenix Hospital Group, is seeking an experienced Anaesthetic & Recovery Practitioner to join the busy theatre team on a full‑time permanent basis. You will work across Anaesthetics and PACU, delivering perioperative care and leading PACU activities as needed.

You will be a Registered General Nurse with the NMC or an RODP with HCPC, with at least two years of clinical experience, and you will contribute to safe, patient-centred care in a multidisciplinary

Qualifications

• Registered General Nurse with the NMC or registered Operating Department Practitioner with the HCPC and at least 2 years of clinical experience.
• Senior practitioner experience is desirable.
• Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
• Commitment to CPD and high standards of care.
• Good IT skills and willingness to learn Compucare.

Responsibilities

• Assist anaesthetist in delivering safe anaesthetic care.
• Prepare and maintain anaesthetic equipment and monitoring devices.
• Support patients through induction, maintenance and emergence from anaesthesia.
• Provide safe care in PACU for post‑operative patients.
• Monitor patients and respond to clinical deterioration promptly.
• Manage postoperative pain and immediate post‑anaesthetic complications.
• Provide leadership within PACU as required.
• Participate in emergency responses (e.g., cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis).
• Ensure accurate documentation and safe handovers.
• Maintain infection prevention and patient safety standards.

Anaesthetic & Recovery Practitioner

One Hatfield Hospital | 37.5 hours per week | Monday–Sunday

One Hatfield Hospital, part of Phoenix Hospital Group, are looking for an experienced and dedicated Anaesthetic & Recovery Practitioner to join our busy theatre team on a full time permanent basis.

Working alongside the Anaesthetic and Recovery Lead and Theatre Manager, you will play an important role in delivering safe, high-quality and individualised care throughout the patient’s perioperative journey. You will work across both Anaesthetics and the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU), using your clinical expertise to support patients before, during and after their procedures.

This is a varied role where you will be expected to work confidently both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. You will also provide leadership within PACU when required and be able to make appropriate management decisions in the absence of the Theatre Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Anaesthetist in the safe delivery of anaesthetic care for surgical and diagnostic procedures.
• Prepare and maintain anaesthetic machines, airway equipment, monitoring devices and emergency drugs.
• Support patients throughout induction, maintenance and emergence from anaesthesia, maintaining their safety, dignity and comfort.
• Provide safe and compassionate care to patients recovering from anaesthesia and surgery within PACU.
• Continuously assess and monitor patients, recognising and responding promptly to clinical deterioration.
• Manage postoperative pain, nausea and other immediate post-anaesthetic complications, escalating concerns appropriately.
• Provide leadership within PACU when required and maintain consistently high standards of patient care.
• Participate in emergency responses, including cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis and airway compromise.
• Ensure accurate clinical documentation, effective handovers and safe transfer of care.
• Maintain high standards of infection prevention, patient safety and clinical governance.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues across the theatre and wider hospital teams.

About you

You will be a Registered General Nurse with the NMC or Registered Operating Department Practitioner with the HCPC, with a minimum of two years' clinical experience.

You will also have:

• Previous experience working in a senior practitioner position.
• Demonstrable knowledge and clinical skills in PACU and Anaesthetics.
• The confidence to make appropriate management decisions when required.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• A patient-focused approach with a commitment to delivering high standards of care and customer service.
• The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Evidence of continuous professional development and application of learning.
• Good IT skills, including experience with Microsoft Office; training on Compucare will be provided.
• Flexibility and adaptability to meet the changing needs of the service.

Previous experience within private healthcare would be desirable.

Working pattern

This is a 37.5-hour per week position, working Monday to Sunday. The role will include evening, weekend and on-call working, so flexibility is essential.
