Job summary

EMED Group is seeking an Ambulance Care Assistant for the Huntingdon area to support mental health transport across NHS and care settings. You will work in a two- to three-person crew, providing safe, person-centred support guided by least restrictive practice.

Role requires a full manual UK driving licence, calm demeanor under pressure, and a commitment to compassionate patient care while working with police and other professionals.

Qualifications

  • Full manual UK driving licence is required.
  • Committed to patient care with ability to build rapport with patients.
  • Effective communicator in emotional or difficult circumstances.
  • Calm, careful driver with no more than six penalty points.
  • Natural teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Physically fit for patient handling and occasional restraint.

Responsibilities

  • Support service users on board as part of a team.
  • Ensure the vehicle is safely and responsibly driven.
  • Assist service users with complex mental health needs.
  • Support service users who may require physical intervention.
  • Transport service users between locations including hospitals, homes and prisons to medical/care settings.
  • Liaise with hospital staff and multi-agency staff for safe conveyance.

Job description

We are looking for an Ambulance Care Assistant to support the new Secure Mental Health Contract in Huntingdon working closely with health care settings and the multiple agencies.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Mental Health Ambulance Care Assistant to join our growing team based in Huntingdon. If you are compassionate, calm under pressure and committed to treating every person with dignity, this could be the role for you.

You will support people with mental health needs during journeys to and from healthcare and other care settings. Working within EMED Group’s Safe Care Mental Health division, you will provide safe, respectful and person-centred support, guided by least restrictive practice. Journeys are usually completed by a two- or three-person crew, so a full manual UK driving licence is essential.

Contract type: Full time, permanent, Mon-Sun 4 on 4 off, 12-hour shifts

Location: Huntingdon

  • £13.56 per hour

Main Duties:
  • Working as part of a team to support the service user on board.
  • Taking responsibility for ensuring the vehicle is safely and responsibly driven.
  • Assisting service users with a range of complex mental health needs
  • Supporting service users, who may need physical intervention to support safely.
  • Working alongside the police and other professionals to transport vulnerable service users between a variety of locations including hospitals, homes and prisons to medical/care settings including A&E, outpatients and hospital wards.
  • Liaising with hospital staff and the multi-agency staff on the safe conveyance of the service user to and from places of safety
  • Responsible for lifting, securing, and helping service users in and out of the ambulance.
  • Handing over of service users to appropriate staff on arrival at treatment centres/hospitals.
  • Transfer service users from beds to stretchers, chairs to chairs or similar both in and out of hospital and medical/commercial flights.
  • Ensuring that the ambulance is kept safe, clean, and tidy.
Successful candidates will have:
  • Full manual UK driving licence.
  • Committed to patient care and the ability to build a rapport with patients.
  • An effective communicator and experience of communicating with others in what can often be emotional and difficult circumstances.
  • To be a calm, considerate, careful driver, with no more than six penalty points on your license.
  • To have a natural flair for team working and collaboration.
  • Be physically fit for patient handling, moving and occasionally, patient restraint when required.
  • Able to problem solve and identify keys changes in patients’ behaviour whilst working demanding situations.
