Ambulance Care Assistant/Driver

Non‑Emergency Patient Transport (NEPT) is a service available for patients who meet the eligibility criteria set by Epsom and St Helier Hospitals Trust and transport commissioners.

The post holder will be a vital member of the team, assisting with the following tasks:

Key Responsibilities
  • Help patients out of their home and into the ambulance (including lifting).
  • Transport patients safely and comfortably to their appointments.
  • Return patients home and ensure they are settled before leaving.
  • Maintain accurate records of journeys on the PDA and Daily Log Sheet.
  • Communicate with control‑room staff via PDA to receive instructions, report journey status, and request meal breaks.
  • Wear a uniform provided by the organization; work alone or in a two‑person team in an adapted ambulance or wheelchair‑accessible vehicle.

The patients you may transport could include:

  • Older people
  • Individuals who are physically disabled
  • People with mental health problems

The role is physically demanding, involves long periods on the road, and may require dealing with distressing situations or seriously ill patients.

Operational Responsibilities
  • Perform vehicle checks (tyre pressure, oil, window‑wash levels) and report defects to the Fleet Team.
  • Ensure the vehicle is stocked with essential consumables and report missing stock.
  • Notify the Shift Manager if the ambulance is untidy after use.
  • Keep regular communications with the Control Team to gain instructions during the shift, report completed or cancelled journeys, and address any errors in patient dossiers.
  • Maintain vehicle refuelling and return the vehicle to base refuelled at shift end.
  • Work in accordance with all relevant policies and procedures.
  • Wear the correct issued uniform in line with BBO guidelines.
  • Sign out and sign in all equipment issued for patient conveyances.
Requirements

Valid, current, Full (manual) UK driving licence with a maximum of 3 penalty points.

The licence must have been held for a minimum of 2 years.

Salary

£13.85 per hour, London Living Wage. This opportunity is NOT on Agenda For Change terms & conditions.
