Job summary

Qualifications

• Previous experience as Allocations Officer or similar local authority role.

• Excellent attention to detail and ability to make robust decisions.

Responsibilities

• Assess housing applications in line with Part VI of the Housing Act 1996 and council policy.
• Determine eligibility, qualification, priority and banding status.
• Review and verify supporting documentation for accurate, lawful decisions.
• Process new applications, changes of circumstances, reviews and reassessments in timescales.
• Provide clear written and verbal communication to applicants regarding decisions.
• Liaise with internal teams and external agencies to obtain additional information as needed.
• Maintain accurate records on the housing management system.
• Support applicants in understanding housing options and the allocations process.
• Ensure all decisions comply with legislation, guidance and equality duties.

This role as an Allocations Officer plays a vital part in ensuring applicants are assessed fairly, accurately, and in line with current housing legislation and local allocations policies.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assess housing applications in accordance with Part VI of the Housing Act 1996 and the council’s allocations policy
• Determine applicants’ eligibility, qualification, priority, and banding status
• Review and verify supporting documentation to ensure accurate and lawful decisions
• Process new applications, change of circumstances, reviews, and reassessments within agreed timescales
• Provide clear written and verbal communication to applicants regarding decisions and next steps
• Liaise with internal teams and external agencies to obtain additional information where required
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records on the housing management system
• Support applicants in understanding their housing options and the allocations process
• Ensure all decisions are compliant with relevant legislation, guidance, and equality duties

Requirements:

• Previous experience working as an Allocations Officer or in a similar housing register role within a local authority or housing association
• Strong working knowledge of Part VI legislation and housing allocations policies
• Experience using housing systems such as Northgate, Civica, or similar
• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to make legally robust decisions
