Job summary

Better Society Capital is transforming into a digitally native organisation to advance impact investing with AI. The role sits in the AI team within the investment function and focuses on internal AI infrastructure, AI academy, and an Innovation Lab to build agentic AI tools for the team.

You will work on AI governance, data pipelines, and scalable AI solutions to support investment workflows, engagement with investors, and ecosystem building.

Qualifications

• Strong technical foundations across languages and tools, with leadership experience in data/IT/AI.
• Proven track record shipping AI or agentic products used by users.
• Experience advising stakeholders on build vs buy, architecture, and vendor choices.

Grade and Salary: £50,400 - £65,800 per annum

Location: Hybrid / London, EC1Y and homeworking

The Opportunity

This is an exciting time to join BSC. We are investing heavily to make us a digitally native organisation for the future of impact investing. A critical part of this is adopting and embedding AI across our work (there is equivalent work happening across data and IT). There are broadly three areas where we’ll apply an AI lens:

1.Our internal operations (everything from investment, to comms, to finance, workflows)

2.Our investment thesis (what should we be investing in in an AI native world)

3.The social impact ecosystem (how can we help others get up the AI curve faster and what can we build with the ecosystem.

We are currently focussed on internal operations as the starting point. There are three buckets of work here:

1.AI Infrastructure – the foundation that everything sits on i.e. establishing and maintaining AI governance and onboarding/expanding ‘foundational’ AI tools across the organisation (e.g. Claude)

2.AI Academy – giving our team the mindset, knowledge, and behaviours to thrive in an AI native world (e.g. our AI speaker series, training programme, hackathons, etc.)

3.AI Innovation Lab - the prompts/Claude skills, automated AI workflows, agents, and products that we build for our team to raise the ceiling of what’s possible

The AI team is a team of two (Head of AI and this role) and formally sits within the investment team (to be closer to the value we want to create), although in practice we sit between investment and a Transformation team with c.10 FTEs.

Your work will be mainly around the AI Innovation Lab but is customisable based on your career goals. Every organisation will have to go through an AI transformation at some point and so this is a role that will be high value for the future. This position gives you the opportunity to play a significant role in that transformation. The learning curve will be steep but rewarding.

What you will do:

• Bring deep AI technical expertise. Our Head of AI combines a strong understanding of BSC and investment (internal hire from the investment team) and intermediate knowledge of technical foundations, statistics, & GenAI and agentic technologies. Your advanced technical capability will complement this experience, creating a powerful combination.
• This is a ‘Swiss army knife’ role. You will have a broad remit of projects to work on that will require different skill sets across the entire lifecycle of a project. Recent/current projects include:

• Automating screening workflows in our venture pipeline with AI
• Evaluating/building a range of connectors via MCP for Claude
• Creating agentic flows to help our engagement team discover new possible investors and tailor outreach for them
• Creating our prompt and skill library with a particular focus on impact assessment (you can read about one of our experiments: https://ssir.org/articles/entry/ai-assessments-impact-investing
• Working on data pipelines with AI (e.g. ingestion, verification) with our data team

• Sit on our AI Taskforce and Technical Design Authority making key decisions about our AI strategy and execution, desired architecture, core agentic capabilities (e.g. what memory system to set up for our agents) AI tooling, etc.
• Design and deliver initiatives to support our team to develop the mindset, knowledge, and behaviours to thrive in an AI native world (e.g. run hackathons)
• Participate in at least one ‘BSC Citizenship’ activity, helping to make BSC a great place to work. This could be helping to organise our summer or winter social, joining the Staff Council or helping with health and safety

What you will bring - Qualifications & Experience

• Strong technical & leadership experience across roles including data, IT or AI, with evidence of making & contributing to significant technical decisions and taking ownership of complex work.
• A demonstrable track record of shipping technical products that users depend on some of which are AI / agentic products
• Acted as a technical advisor / thinking partner with organisational stakeholders in key decisions e.g. build vs. buy, vendor choices, architecture design etc.
• An appetite for learning, and a track record of staying technically current in a fast-moving field; much of what this role uses in two years does not exist yet, so your ability to keep pace and pick up new tools and techniques matters more to us than mastery of any single one today
• A passion and demonstrable commitment to improving lives in the UK
• Degree /MSc in computer science / data / AI or equivalent (including professional training or other signals of technical capability like open-source contributions)
• Work experience in impact/sustainable investing or our asset classes (property, debt, venture, outcome contracts) – you will be working closely with our investment team so familiarity with investment workflows will be useful

Skills, Abilities & Attributes

• Technical foundations are essential for this role: strong Python, fluent with AI-assisted coding tools, comfortable working with a range of languages across the stack
• AI and LLM expertise are essential for the role: you understand the technical elements well enough to make confident decisions (how transformers work; familiarity with fine-tuning, RAG, embeddings; interpreting benchmarks; understanding of current model landscape, etc.) and are comfortable with building and deploying related products (prompt engineering, running evals, setting up guardrails, MCPs etc.)
• Prompt engineering, prompts/skills are seen as ‘products’ that are built with users in mind, iterated, evaluated, versioned, etc. and you can be a credible owner of our prompt/skill library
• Context engineering, you can think through what information a model / agent needs to execute a given task and how best to deliver it efficiently and effectively (including the necessary data pipeline work to get it there)
• End-to-end ownership, you’re comfortable working with a project from problem discovery and scoping through to deployment and iteration. This is particularly important on key design choices that affect architecture and security, and you are able to deploy the right level of engineering rigour for a given problem. You are comfortable working solo or as part of a small project team
• Stakeholder engagement, you’re a clear communicator and can work with people from different functions (investment, comms, engagement, etc.) especially when they’re non-technical
• Ability to work closely with our data team on getting data in / out of our data infrastructure (Fabric) as well as using AI to help with data pipelines and workflows (e.g. data ingestion)
• Ability to work closely with our IT team on IT/AI architecture, maintaining our IT security, and configuring the interface between IT and AI work (permissions, SSO, authentication, secrets/API key management etc.)
• Familiarity with Microsoft ecosystem (Graph API, Azure, SharePoint, Power Automate, etc.). Our IT team manages this, and we will be working closely with them for our AI/agentic builds
• Familiarity with Anthropic products: Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, Managed Agents, etc.
• Cost modelling: given rapidly changing landscape of provider business models and price structures, this is an important skill to make sure we’re remaining within expected budgets
