Contract Type: Permanent
Purpose of the Role
The AI Augmented Software Engineer role will enable a new way of building software as the team moves to an AI‑first approach, using tools such as Claude Code to design, build, and shape features that accelerate the achievement of business objectives. The role will be responsible for the full software development life cycle for specific projects, from discovery and coding through testing, deployment, DevOps, observability, and cybersecurity.
Key Responsibilities
- Proactively communicate progress on projects, blockers, and project timelines to the Head of Engineering and Product & Delivery Lead.
- Use cutting‑edge AI coding tools, particularly Claude Code, to design, implement, and improve features on the EQUAL platform.
- Work across domains (product, design, data, DevOps, cyber security) to understand problems and ship valuable solutions quickly.
- Translate business goals into actionable product features and deliverables.
- Provide precise prompts, specifications, and tasks for AI tools, then refine and review the generated output.
- Ensure high‑quality deliverables through unit testing, automated checks, and comprehensive documentation.
- Suggest and implement improvements in systems, processes, and developer workflows, especially where AI can remove friction.
- Work with the team to ensure that AI tools are used consistently and appropriately across the team, including agreeing on patterns, guardrails, and best practices.
- Keep on top of the latest developments in AI tooling and practices so the organization remains at the cutting edge of AI‑assisted software development.
Qualifications & Skills
- High level of proficiency in at least one programming language, with evidence you can learn new languages quickly.
- Experience writing and maintaining unit tests or other automated tests in any language or framework.
- Ability to take a feature or problem from idea through to production, including design, implementation, testing, and deployment.
- Strong interest in AI tools for software engineering, with a clear view on their strengths, weaknesses, and appropriate use.
- Comfortable reviewing and editing AI‑generated code and content, rather than blindly accepting outputs.
- Good collaboration skills when working with cross‑functional teams and stakeholders.
- Clear, concise written and verbal communication, including reporting on progress, trade‑offs, and technical constraints.
- Demonstrated ability to balance delivery speed with code quality, security, and long‑term maintainability.
- Habit of applying engineering best practices: version control, code review, documentation, and sensible testing.
- Experience using AI coding assistants (for example Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar) in your day‑to‑day work (desirable).
- Exposure to modern DevOps practices (CI/CD, infrastructure as code, monitoring, incident response) (desirable).
- Exposure to secure coding practices or application‑level cyber security concerns (desirable).
- Experience working across different parts of the stack, or a track record of picking up new tools rapidly (desirable).
- A genuine interest in education and the impact of technology and AI on how people learn (desirable).
