Job description
Overview

Physical and Sensory Support is a team that includes Teachers and Specialist Teaching Assistants who work in home and school settings. As an Advisory Teacher of the Deaf (ATOD), you will be working with deaf children and young people aged 0–19, supporting them as well as their families, teachers and other professionals. The role is part of a county‑wide team within Children, Families and Lifelong Learning, currently under Education and Lifelong Learning. Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) Surrey County Council is moving from a two‑tier system to two new unitary councils in April 2027. If you are employed by Surrey on 1 April 2027, your role will transfer with current terms and conditions to one of the new organisations.

Responsibilities
  • Work with deaf children and young people across home and school settings, delivering a statutory service to vulnerable children and young people.
  • Utilise your current or recent teaching experience and extensive knowledge of special needs and disability to support and empower children and their families.
  • Collaborate with teams and contribute positively to the support of children with additional needs.
  • For those without a Post Graduate Diploma in Deaf Education, enrol in a funded two‑year, part‑time university course commencing September 2026.
Qualifications
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • A commitment to, and knowledge of, working with deaf children and young people and/or children and young people with additional needs and disability.
  • Experience of working within a team and the positive contribution you have made.
  • A willingness to undertake a funded, 2‑year post‑graduate course in deaf education.

Salary and Working Pattern

The permanent, three‑day‑per‑week (0.6 FTE) position has a pay range (fringe) of £46,039 – £52,490 per annum, pro‑rata. An SEN allowance of £2,787 – £5,497 pro‑rata is added if the successful applicant holds the Post Graduate Diploma in Deaf Education.
