Job summary

Barts Health NHS Trust in London is seeking a Rehab Support Worker to join the Surgical, Medical and Respiratory Therapy Team at Newham University Hospital on a 7-month fixed-term, part-time contract (22.5 hours, Mon–Fri; weekend roster when required).

The role focuses on assisting therapists with patient rehabilitation, carrying out assessments, and recording progress while working within the multidisciplinary team and upholding the Trust values.

Qualifications

• GCSE Maths and English or a good standard of written English, numeracy and IT skills.
• Formal technical qualification, e.g. City & Guilds, or NVQ in a Health related field, or equivalent skills acquired through in-service development or experience.
• Foundation degree in rehabilitation or equivalent through in service development or experience.

Responsibilities

• Assist Therapists in rehabilitation by carrying out treatment plans and progressing them within agreed frameworks.
• Carry out patient assessment and treatment on the ward and hospital gyms as needed.
• Undertake formalised assessments and reporting including cognitive and functional measures.
• Work autonomously to support patients in their rehabilitation plans with effective communication.
• Assist Therapists in treatment requiring more than one therapist, including complex cases.
• Identify need for re-evaluation, progression and termination of interventions and plans.
• Modify specific patient treatment programmes by reassessing and progressing as appropriate with therapist approval.
• Autonomously order simple aids and adaptations and support ordering of therapy equipment.
• Communicate effectively with therapists about patients' condition and progress.
• Record patient information in line with departmental standards and patient records.

Job overview

Although this position is a 7 months fixed-term contract, the actual contract duration will be adjusted to account for the time taken to advertise the post, complete the hiring process, and finalise pre-employment checks. This means the contract will begin when the candidate starts the role and may be slightly shorter than 7 months.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and flexible Rehab Support Worker to join our Surgical, Medical and Respiratory Therapy Team at Newham University Hospital.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, plenty of initiative and good time management skills. Experience of working with patients or the public is essential and you will be required to demonstrate the Trust values at all times.

This post involves close multidisciplinary team working with the Physiotherapists and Occupational therapists within the acute setting.

The role involves a number of different duties, including accepting patients referred by the therapists for treatment, working unsupervised, reporting back regarding patient progress, informing the therapists of any problems and maintaining appropriate records.

This post is a part-time fixed term contract, 22.5hrs per week, Monday to Friday - the team runs a 7 day service, this role includes participation in a weekend roster when necessary.

Main duties of the job

• To assist therapists in the rehabilitation of patients by carrying out treatment plans developed by therapists and by progressing those treatment plans within agreed frameworks.
• To carry out patient assessment and treatment on the ward and hospital gyms as needed.
• To undertake formalised assessments and reporting including cognitive and functional measures.
• Work autonomously without direct supervision to support patients in their rehabilitation plans using advanced communication and therapeutic handling skills.
• Assist Therapists in treatment requiring more than one therapist including those with complex therapeutic handling needs.
• To autonomously identify need for re-evaluation, progression and termination of interventions and plans.
• Modify specific patient treatment programmes by reassessing and progressing as appropriate where agreed by responsible Therapist.
• Autonomously order identified simple aids and adaptations as well as to support the ordering of Therapy prescribed equipment, aids and adaptations.
• To communicate effectively with therapists about patients' condition.
• To record patient information in line with departmental standards.
• To support patient centred rehabilitation in order to facilitate timely, safe discharge, reflecting individual choice and maximizing individuals' independence.
