Job Summary

A rare opportunity is available for a highly motivated and experienced Physiotherapist to join the Spinal Deformity team at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This post is Band 7, with an option for Band 6 applicants who are willing to train toward Band 7 within a two‑year period.

Experience in scoliosis management is desirable but not essential. You will work with a wide MDT to lead service development and support patients from pre‑operative to post‑operative spinal deformity care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. There are two attached job descriptions (Band 7 and Band 6). Please indicate at the start of your Supporting Information section which level you are applying for.

Main duties of the job

You would be responsible for delivering a mix of outpatient and inpatient work, both independently and as part of the highly specialist MDT. You will work with patients to prepare them for surgery (pre‑hab) as well as delivering Enhanced Recovery After Surgery, and where appropriate, post‑op outpatient care. There is access to hydrotherapy and a small gym on site at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. Time is protected for service and personal development in line with AHP Job Planning, and access to CPD. Audit is expected to be embedded within the role, and clinical effectiveness and quality improvement are core to this role. The team includes 2 ESPs specializing in spinal conditions and close collaboration with specialist neurosurgical therapy teams. The working pattern is Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday to meet service needs.

Person Specification

Meets All Band 7 Criteria

  • Essential: Degree or equivalent Diploma in Physiotherapy; State Registration with HCPC; evidence of CPD and post‑graduate study to MSc level; extensive post‑grad experience including senior physiotherapist experience within the specialty; experience in multidisciplinary teams; teaching and presentation experience; advanced knowledge of relevant medical conditions; good communication and interpersonal skills; ability to teach and pass on skills; good organisation, time management, prioritisation, and teamwork; ability to reflect and critically appraise practice
  • Desirable: knowledge of research projects; knowledge of NHS initiatives; CSP membership; involvement with CSP Clinical Special Interest Groups; previous Band 7 experience; experience with audits; IT skills; specialist treatment skills
