Job description

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate nurse with an interest in non‑specific rapid diagnostics to join our nurse practitioner team. In this role, the Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) will be part of a multidisciplinary team who specialise in the evaluation, diagnosis and management of patients with suspected cancer and abnormal imaging. The ANP will serve as a key provider in co‑ordinating and delivering a high‑quality, patient‑centred diagnostic care within an agreed scope of practice.

The post holder will ensure that patients presenting with suspected cancer and abnormal imaging are directed to rapid appropriate diagnostic investigations, are discussed in MDT, and receive information rapidly through expert communication skills to support patients and families through potentially emotionally charged situations.

The post holder will be expected to monitor the impact of the rapid diagnostic clinic, using a number of key metrics. This will be of a demonstrably high standard and will influence patient care through expert clinical practice, management, leadership, education, research, audit and professional activities.

  • As the RDC advanced nurse practitioner the post holder will provide direct care, advice, management and supervision of high‑quality patient‑focused services for patients referred into the rapid diagnostic clinic.
  • The post holder will provide professional, high‑quality, responsive service with the needs of the patient at the centre of care delivery.
  • The post holder will be a key member of the RDC multidisciplinary team and will be the main point of liaison between patient and local GPs.
  • The post holder will take responsibility for autonomous clinical decision making beyond the scope of normal levels of nursing practice.
  • The post holder will undertake triage of the patient after referral from Primary care, supervise and co‑ordinate the patient’s investigative pathway between hospital departments such as medicine and radiology, and act as the point of contact between the patient and various specialty teams involved in the diagnostic process, facilitating investigations prior to a clinical assessment wherever feasible and appropriate to ensure a timely diagnosis.
  • The post holder will act in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and guiding documents.
  • The post holder will be influential in the strategic delivery of services ensuring quality of care and will be actively involved with research and audit.
