Advanced Learning Support Assistant (SEND / SEMH) – Scarborough

📍 Location: Scarborough

💷 Pay: £14-£18 / Dependent on experience and qualifications

📄 Contract: Long-term, term-time (possibility of permanent)

🕒 Role: Advanced LSA (Learning Support Assistant) – Primary & Secondary

About the Role

We are hiring on behalf of a specialist provision in the Scarborough area that supports students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs. This role will be based in a mixed-age setting, working across both primary and secondary phases. As an Advanced LSA, you will play a vital part in supporting challenging behaviour, delivering 1:1 and group interventions, and mentoring other LSAs to help build a consistent, therapeutic learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide targeted 1:1 and small-group support for students with SEMH / SEND needs
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff to develop and implement behaviour support plans
  • Support, coach, and mentor general LSAs to ensure consistent strategies across the setting
  • Use de-escalation techniques, emotional regulation strategies, and positive behaviour approaches
  • Assist with structured learning activities, social skills work, and therapeutic interventions
  • Monitor, document, and report on students’ behaviour, academic progress, and safeguarding concerns
  • Communicate with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals (therapists, social services etc.)
  • Promote a calm, safe, and inclusive environment where all students feel supported
Person Specification / Requirements
  • Proven experience as an LSA, ideally in a SEMH, SEND, or challenging‑behaviour provision
  • Qualification: LSA qualification (e.g., Level 3) or higher, or equivalent experience working with SEMH / SEND students
  • Strong behaviour management skills and experience using de-escalation techniques; training in approaches such as Team Teach or MAPA is highly desirable
  • Excellent communication, patience, and empathy, able to build strong relationships with young people who may demonstrate challenging behaviours
  • Willingness to obtain an enhanced DBS check
