Advanced Biomedical Scientist – Biochemistry

Location: London, HCA Laboratories (Shropshire House)

Employment type: Full time, 37.5 hours per week

Shift pattern: 7.5 hour shifts Monday‑Friday. Weekend rota participation also required.

Salary: Competitive with weekend work paid as overtime.

Permanent position.

Overview

HCA Laboratories, with over 35 years of experience, offers a comprehensive 24‑hour pathology service across multiple disciplines. The Advanced Biomedical Scientist in Biochemistry will provide high‑quality service and bring any issues affecting service provision to the Service Lead/Deputy.

Shift Times
  • Monday‑Friday: 08:00 – 16:30
  • Monday‑Friday: 09:30 – 18:00
  • Monday‑Friday: 10:30 – 19:00
  • Monday‑Friday: 12:00 – 20:30
  • Weekends: 08:00 – 14:00
  • Weekends: 08:00 – 20:30
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Speedy and accurate processing of samples, monitoring and resolving outstanding lists
  • Coordinate with 3rd‑Party Liaison Officer to ensure urgent work is completed on time
  • Monitor Validation/authorising queue to prevent build‑ups
  • Manage specimen reception and chemistry flow efficiently and proactively
  • Maintain good working relationship with Consultant Biochemists; ensure real‑time escalation of critical results
  • Support training of junior staff and trainee BMS staff
  • Draw up staff rotas for section cover
  • Ensure equipment in Biochemistry functions correctly; perform maintenance and record keeping
  • Validate new tests and equipment
  • Review and revise SOPs and other documents
  • Maintain UKAS accreditation
What You Will Bring
  • BSc. Biomedical Science (or equivalent)
  • MSc desirable but not essential
  • HCPC registered
  • Member of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences; fellow desirable
  • Evidence of continual personal development
  • Extensive knowledge of Clinical Biochemistry (preferably a specialist portfolio)
  • Working knowledge of Roche Cobas and Infinity
